Having liberty means that we are free within society from oppressive constraints imposed by authority on our manner of life, behavior, or political views. As campus journalists, we must exercise our right to speak out and perform our duties, which is to inform and seek out the truth in the interests of the public's right to know. In recognition of the role of campus journalism in promoting and defending press freedom and freedom of expression, we celebrate National Campus Press Freedom Day.
Declared on August 28, 2019, through Republic Act No. 11440 or the National Campus Press Freedom Day Act, which marks the 25th of July every year as a momentous day for celebrating the freedom of the campus press. Journalism serves as our front line of information and being in the 21st century, we can instantly be provided with various types of information with just one click. It is our right to be able to access all the latest news and information. Upon the shoulders of every journalist is the responsibility to defend the freedom of information and respect the truth. As journalists, we are empowered because we know that we can use our voice to serve a greater purpose and make an impact in the community through our writing. Because just like a pen without ink, being a journalist serves no purpose if our freedom of speech is being suppressed.
There is a voice inside all of us listen to it. Do not raise it to shout, but use it so you can give a voice to those who do not have it. Speak up even if your voice shakes, speak the truth the world needs to know, and just as Darcess Dossen said, Do whatever it takes to make your voice heard at all times. Do not let your voice be stifled, silenced, or strangulated in any way. Your voice is a weapon to bring about mass change.
