Student Journalists are the ones who deliver facts and produce content for the campus or the community. Besides that, our main goal is not to receive many awards but to give the student body and our community accurate information and to use our voice to stand for the truth. As student journalists, we are glad to acknowledge the former Editors-In-Chief of Yraga/Amudyong, Ma. Bernadette R. Panaligan and Mary Lorelie A. Potencio for exhibiting their journalistic skills in Gawad Lagablab: Search for Ten Outstanding Youth Journalists of the Philippines.
The University of Saint Anthony is known for having students that excel not just academically but also in other fields. One of those fields is Journalism. Last July, two student journalists from USANT proudly brought pride to the university, especially to the Yraga/Amudyong Publication in Gawad Lagablab: Search for Ten Outstanding Youth Journalists conducted by Asinbolo. The Editor-In-Chief of batch 2020, Mary Lorelie A. Potencio, has already shown her passion and drive in journalism for she had participated in many contests related to journalism regionally and nationally. Ms. Potencio also showed her leadership skills for making the Yraga/Amudyong effective despite the new mode of classes. Now, a new achievement has been unlocked for her during the Gawad Lagablab event. She made it to the top 20 finalists, the 2nd highest scorer in Editorial Writing, and the 4th placer in the Ten outstanding Youth Journalists. She stated in her post, that it will always be an honor to represent the Yraga/Amudyong, the organization she dearly loved.
On the other hand, Ma. Bernadette R. Panaligan, Editor-In-Chief of batch 2018 is not only a journalist but also a student leader and a youth advocate. Besides her passion to lead the student body, she also loves to help and serve people. Ms. Panaligan also exhibits her talent, most especially in writing. After the Gawad Lagablab Awarding Ceremony, she showed her deepest gratitude for making it to the top 20 finalists, winning 1st place with the highest score in Editorial Writing, and being the 2nd place in the Ten Outstanding Youth Journalists. She stated, “We as journalists, have the responsibility to promote truth and transparency, serve our countrymen, give visibility to the marginalized sectors, speak for the silent majority, and use our journalistic skills for the common good of the people.” She also remarked that the medal of satisfaction, fulfillment, responsibility, humility, voice, and principles are the things she will treasure a lot in life.
The two student journalists showed us that passion mixed with perseverance and hard work will always have the best result. As student journalists, it has never been easy, but what makes us stay and continue is the fire that keeps burning inside us that will always stand for the truth and that journalism will always be engraved in our hearts. So, to the young ones, student journalists, dreamers, and to all the people out there, as early as now, start pursuing your goals, and the next thing you’ll know is you are very close to success. Always remember that it is not too late to dream and to achieve our dreams.
