To Guide, Not Decide

Nowadays, it is common for parents to impose certain career choices on their children due to popular belief that they are not mature enough to make these decisions themselves. What matters the most to our parents is for us to have a quality education that will surely help us succeed in our professional future. For this reason, our parent guides us to make realistic choices for college courses. Nevertheless, is it right to get involved or not to get involved? Is it possible to suggest without controlling?
Firstly, although many parents decide not to interfere in the vocational choice of their children, the truth is it is unlikely to happen. These days, it is more complex to find the perfect college course as the actual market changes so rapidly and offers a wide variety of options in response to new needs. Faced with this situation, children often perceive their parents as their role models to look up to. As a result, children let their parents take charge of their future instead of freely deciding on their own. However, it is important to emphasize at this point that our decision of whatever we will pursue in college is something that will mark us forever. A Southern Hampshire University career consult named Bienvenue Muragwa said that parents or adults that take care of a child should only guide and not make choices for them since it gives them an independent stance to truly decide what they are capable of.
Moreover, recent studies demonstrate the impact of a parent's role and involvement in career selection for college is notorious. When the moment comes for children to decide, should parents contribute their point of view on what they think is best for their children or refuse from doing so? Experts such as Eugene Fixer Ngoga, a career director of a guidance unit, stated that “The decision should be mutually made and guided by the parents based on the child’s strength, weakness, and their will to progress and make improvements for themselves with their craft”.
Therefore, children need to remain firm in their convictions and interests. On the other hand, parents should support these decisions and guide them to develop their abilities that will surely hone their skills. Additionally, children should be aware that parents are in the obligation to convey their interests or expectations. These suggestions should be considered as just a factor to take into account or a bit of advice when making a decision. Children shouldn’t feel pressured or forced to satisfy. In return, parents should explore the possible opportunities of their major choices, but leaving their children the freedom to be the protagonists of their decisions.
