Artificial intelligence is truly remarkable and this program has no intention of denying that fact. However, there is a lot of uncertainty and a lack of understanding among youth, especially when it comes to AI's environmental implications. Like all technological developments, it brings us unprecedented possibilities for good and bad.
With AI4E, high school volunteers educate elementary schoolers, sharing and gaining a sustainable perspective on how to interact with AI so we -- as eco-friendly, conscientious digital citizens -- can ethically build a better world together.
AI for the future is made of four key concepts:
Elementary - teaching students before they develop full digital dependency on AI
Education - giving them a better understanding of the pros and cons of AI usage
Environment - examining the technology through an more global, environmentally conscious viewpoint
Empowerment - opening opportunities for high school students to share what they know
"Instead of believing that the future of AI is already written, that it consists of huge LLMs powered by infinite amounts of energy [...] we can take back the wheel and shape an alternative future for AI together. A future where AI models are small but mighty [...] without needing huge data centers. A future in which we have the information we need to choose one AI model over the other based on its carbon footprint. A future in which legislation exists that makes big AI companies take accountability for the damage that they’re causing to people and the environment. A future in which AI serves all of humanity, not just a handful of for-profit tech companies. With every prompt, every click, and every query, we can reinvent the future of AI to be more sustainable together.”

“If you’re a customer of large AI models, you hold the power. Your voice [...] can drive transparency, and thus AI sustainability.”
