The Academy Awards, or as more popularly known, the Oscars, are prestigious awards for high talent in the artistic and film industries. It is a very old tradition, the first Academy Awards being given back in 1929; 92 years ago.
This year, 2022, the Oscars Ceremony was held on Sunday, March 27. Some of the most popular awards given were: Encanto- Best Animated Film, No Time To Die (by Billie Eilish and FINNEAS)- Best Original Song, Jessica Chastain (The Eyes of Tammy Faye)- Best Actress, and Will Smith (as King Richard)- Best Actor.
In fact, the real drama unfolded later on. Chris Rock, a famous comedian, made a joke about Will Smith's wife, and both his wife and him became very offended. He then had an impulse and defiantly walked onto the stage, going up to Chris Rock. Surprisingly, Will Smith slapped him, and it was a very bad act on Smith's part. Chris Rock handled it very professionally, and no further violence ensued.
The LAPD was later waiting outside the building, but Chris Rock refused to let them arrest Will Smith and did not press charges.
Smith later gave an apology speech and posted on social media that he regretted his actions.
Will Smith later paid the price anyway. He has now resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts (right before he was expelled) which means he cannot participate in voting for the Oscars, but can still be nominated for future awards. He has also been banned from attending any other Oscars ceremonies for 10 years.
