I remember learning about guardian angels as a child, and being completely freaked out by it. In my spiritual immaturity, the idea of a being that I could not see following me around wherever I went was unsettling.

'From infancy to death human life is surrounded by their (the angels) watchful care and intercession. Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him to life. Already here on earth the Christian life shares by faith in the blessed company of angels and men united to God. '

Go to a quiet room and shut the door to block out other people's energy. Sit still, close your eyes, calm your mind, and ask your higher self for the name of one of your guardian angels. The name will then be placed in your head.

Angels love to send you signs that can improve your life as well as simple reminders of their loving presence. You can ask the guardian angels to send you a sign either by writing this request in your journal, through a more formal prayer, or by briefly meditating on the idea.

When you dedicate a song to your guardian angels, this song becomes their calling card. It will play on the radio whenever your angels want to remind you of their constant presence. You should pick a song that makes you feel comforted, safe, and loved.

As human beings, we all have access to a team of guardian angels. All angels are pure spirits that appreciate when we connect with them, be it through prayer, song, journaling, or whatever medium we feel most comfortable with.

Send your thoughts to Letters to the Editor. Learn moreDecember 11, 2021Share on FacebookShare on TwitterEmail to a friendPrint My brother Oliver died 41 years ago of pneumonia in my mother's arms. After bathing him in bed with a sponge for 32 years, after feeding him with a spoon for 32 years, after pulling down the shade each morning so the rising sun did not burn his tender skin, Oliver took his last breath and my mother whispered, "Goodbye my angel."

Oliver learned to do two things: raise his crooked arms up and down and laugh. That is all. Sometimes in the middle of the night I could hear his belly laughter echoing down the hall. My grandmother often said that Oliver was laughing with the angels.

Oliver made me a better man. I have been a father, teacher and writer all of my life. Through my brother's helplessness he taught me how to help children in need. Through his silence he pointed out how to be a poet. Through Oliver's hunger he showed me, like Merlin, how to mix life in a red bowl. Oliver was my guardian angel.

The Islamic tradition speaks about the raqib, the watcher, an angel who protects mankind throughout our lives. The Buddhist lamas teach that the devas are angel-like, ethereal beings who applaud our goodness, rejoice when we are well and rain flowers over us when we struggle throughout lives.

Christians believe, as Pope Francis said in 2014, that "no one walks alone, and none of us can think he is alone." And he acknowledged that the voice of our guardian angel is always within us, whispering wisdom and comfort during our times of distress.

On my brother's tombstone at the Benedictine monastery in Weston, Vermont, my mother wrote "Blessed are the pure of heart, for they shall see God." May your guardian angel help you see God, Allah, Buddha, Abraham, Christ. May we all sleep in peace and laugh at midnight.

Dental assistants are the dental practice's/clinic's principal infection control officer. Their are the unsung and often underpaid heroes who should be given some time to stand alongside the dentists at this hour. They are responsible for ensuring that the patient experience with the dental practitioner is a pleasant and ever so importantly, a SAFE one. For the lay person, these are the gentlemen and or ladies who often greet you first before the dentist and ensure that your anxiety is alleviated before the big and scary dentist works in to perform the procedure and they are the ones often manning the noisy suction to prevent you from chocking on your own saliva, but they are so much more.

That said, I salute those assistants who are waking up on a daily basis to ensure that our communities are safe by ensuring that those who need and seek emergency dental care at this dark hour, do so with the utmost confidence that they will not contract this disease in the confines of a dental setting. Thank you to all our unsung heroes, those of you who will not find your names in the headlines for your tremendous sacrifice and contribution to oral healthcare.

Next time you see a dental assistant, thank them. Thank them for being the angels that have long kept you safe even before the COVID-19 pandemic, for continuing to show up even though they enjoy considerably less benefits than their oral health counterparts. Appreciate that the work they do matters, that they matter more now, than they ever did before.

It was during this long year that I learned how Padre Pio would send his guardian angel to comfort people. Like many people of my generation, I often endure the pain of loneliness. So, as a lonely person, I began to find comfort in the teaching that guardian angels can be a source of comfort and friendship to such a degree that these personal protectors can comfort our loved ones in a time of need.

Your guardian angel is there to pray for you. If you are struggling, ask your angel to offer your sufferings and desires to the Lord on your behalf. As well, offer your thanksgiving for to God for providing a guardian angel to guide you.

As shown above, St. Pio of Pietrelcina would send his guardian angel to comfort others. Additionally, St. Therese often prayed that her guardian angel would comfort her loved ones and remind them of the sweet name of Jesus.

Because of the ongoing pandemic, many of us were reminded that we could send our guardian angel to Mass when we are unable to attend. As well, here is a prayer you may find useful when you need your guardian angel to attend Mass for you:

Today is the memorial of the Guardian Angels. It is Catholic teaching that each person has a guardian angel assigned to them by God to guide and protect them throughout this life on the journey to heaven. The Catechism teaches us:

From its beginning until death, human life is surrounded by their watchful care and intercession. Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him to life. Already here on earth the Christian life shares by faith in the blessed company of angels and men united in God.

It is true that we are all called to be child-like. Jesus said that we must be like a child to enter into heaven (Mt 18:3). So there is absolutely nothing wrong with an adult praying the very simple Guardian Angel prayer. But it is also true that we are called to grow and mature in our faith, and as we grow we should develop an adult relationship with our guardian angel.

See, I am sending an angel before you, to guard you on the way and bring you to the place I have prepared. Be attentive to him and heed his voice. Do not rebel against him, for he will not forgive your sin. My authority resides in him. If you heed his voice and carry out all I tell you, I will be an enemy to your enemies and a foe to your foe.

The saints enjoy fellowship with the angels in heaven now, but also had a strong devotion to the angels during their earthly life. So should you befriend your guardian angel. No one else, other than Christ himself, desires so much to get you into heaven. Your angel truly is your best friend and your must trusted protector. I will end with these words from St. Bernard of Clairvaux, a 12th century Benedictine abbot, from a sermon he preached about the guardian angels.

Be alert in your every action as one should be who is accompanied by angels in all your ways, for that mission has been enjoined upon them. In whatever lodging, in whatever nook or corner you may find yourself, cherish a reverence for your guardian angel. In his presence do not dare to do anything you would not do in mine. Or do you doubt his presence because you do not see him? Would it really help if you did hear him, or touch him, or smell him? Remember, there are realities whose existence has not been proven by mere sight.

It's possible, though, that the seemingly worst element of the situation, that you have to face everyone constantly through your son, will prove to be the most useful. Anger is a natural and healthy response, but only if you don't allow it to linger. And while you might think the constant exposure to these two will keep stirring up the anger, the opposite can also be true if you let it be: that constant exposure will force you to let go of the anger, get bored with it even, and get used to your new reality.

So that's how I suggest you handle it--let the whole thing get old and stay civil for the kids. That will allow you to feel good about yourself, which is how you'll find your way to feeling good again in general. e24fc04721
