History of Science/STS/Science & Technology Policy

Updated in December 203

Hi, I'm Youjung Shin (신유정), an assistant professor at the Department of Science Studies at Jeonbuk National University. I’m interested in the dynamics among knowledge, technology, and policy in the development of emerging scientific fields. The common theme of my research projects is to examine underlying material and social infrastructures in the production and circulation of scientific knowledge across countries.

My projects examine:

(1) the rise and growth of interdisciplinary fields, i.e. neuroscience, cognitive science, AI

(2) the role of computing technologies in shaping knowledge infrastructure in S&T

(3) the flow of data, especially biomedical data, across disciplines, societies, and countries

(4) the nature of big science and international collaboration in the post-Cold War period

(5) the development of research and education policy for brain-intensive industries in a developing country

From a historical and comparative perspective, I'm working on the transnational history and policy of emerging S&T. For more about my research activities by topic, please check [here]. For my policy activities, please check [here]. You can check my teaching activities [here]. Though mostly focusing on qualitative research, I'm interested in bringing a mixed-method approach to my research [one example].

Before joining Jeonbuk National University, I was a research professor at the Center for Science, Policy, and Society at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and a postdoctoral researcher at MIT's Program in Science, Technology, and Society. I received my Ph.D. at the Graduate School of Science, Technology, and Policy at KAIST in 2019.
