Start a Conversation with God

Start a Conversation with God!

God our heavenly Father created us and cares about our lives. Prayer, talking to God, does not have to happen in any specific way or place. God just wants to hear what is on our hearts. Would you take a few minutes to consider the questions below, and start a conversation with God!

God says, "Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know." Jeremiah 33:2-3

1. Do you ever talk to God?

Most people believe there is a God, and many have talked to God (prayed) even if they are not religious.

2. What do you talk to God about?

When you have talked to God, what was going on in your life that led you to pray? We usually talk to God when we are struggling with a question in our lives. How am I going to pay this bill? Why is my co-worker so mean? Will I be able to recover from this illness? Why do I feel guilty for some of the things I have done in my life? How can I be a better parent or spouse?

3. Do you think that God hears you?

Many people who talk to God are unsure if their prayer is being heard. Since we do not see God physically it is a leap of faith to believe that God is listening to our prayer. Some people have asked God for something specific and God did not answer their prayer in the way they hoped. When a loved one dies, or we have financial struggles, or we have problems at school or work, it can cause us to question if God is listening. Talking to God does not answer all of the questions in our lives. Prayer helps us to express what is on our hearts and to understand God's answers.

4. Does God ever talk to you?

This question causes many people to feel a little awkward. Probably none of us have heard a voice from heaven, but we may have sensed God speaking to our hearts. We may have felt comfort, or hope, or forgiveness inside of us. This is God talking to us. God wants to help us to grow in wisdom, hope, patience, courage and love.

God may also speak to our hearts about letting light in the dark places of our hearts - our fears, our pains and our failures. Through prayer, the Bible and other believers, God wants to begin talking to us about our past, our present and our future.

Past - God wants to help us to let go of the pains of our past by teaching us about forgiveness - asking God to forgive us for the times we have hurt others, and asking God to help us forgive those who have hurt us.

Present - God wants to help us to have wisdom about our relationships, our finances and our life choices.

Future - God wants us to have conversations with us here on earth so that our earthly lives will be full of faith, hope and love. Our conversations with God can continue forever when our earthly life is over.

5. Would you like to talk to God right now?

The Bible says, "God did this so that people would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us." Acts 17:27

If you would like to begin a conversation with God about the direction of your life the simple prayer below could be a beginning of a conversation that never ends . . .

Dear God, thank you for caring about my life. I want to have conversations with you.

Forgive me for the times I have hurt myself and others with my words or actions.

Please help me to make wise decisions about my life.

Help me to learn how to love other people the way that you love me.

In Jesus' Name, Amen
