Expected to Learn; Entitled to Achieve
Day 1
We started the day with some ice breakers and then traveled to TCC to learn more about what will be expected at the college level.
Day 2- Session 1
This day started with a visit from our industry partner, Texas Instruments. They taught us how to code using the TI calculators. The scholars did a fabulous job! The goal was to move the rover as close to the dog without hitting it. Some "casualties" occurred, but success was found in the end! Many of the guys wanted to go further in the coding and learned how to program the rover to turn around.
Hau & Isaac getting things figured out...
Gabriel troubleshooting to get the Rover to go the distance desired. That's TSTEM at work!
Ayoon & Ryan got really close to Spot. Then we have the team of Mustafa & Santiago... both were so close!
Kobin & Adrian's attempt created a "casualty".
Mustafa & Santiago had a casualty...
Artis & Caleb's attempt at missing Spot.
Adrian & Kobin learning to code the turns for the Rover.
Day 2- Session 2
After our fun with TI, we had to cover some essential information needed for success in the TSTEM Program. Ms. Jones, our high school counselor, provided some important details about how the Freshman year is SO important and the requirements for graduation. Mrs. Reed, our middle school counselor, and Ms. White, our data analyst, went over some email etiquette with students. We closed out the day with a scavenger hunt created by Mrs. Cleveland, our Freshman Success Coach.
Day 3
Today started with a review of what TSTEM and CCMR means and why they are important. The scholars learned the various pathways to become CCMR met and were given some scenarios to determine how their student could meet the requirement for CCMR. After that, they used the design process to create a Tower of Power. This activity had them create a tower out of index cards. The group with the tallest tower that could hold the weight of a stuffed toy without collapsing was the winner!
As in life, not every attempt is successful. Keep trying guys! You don't lose until you quit trying!!
Tower of Power Champions!
Joseph, Micah, & Jose
We even had some pearls of wisdom shared by our newest alumni!
Day 4
Today our scholars took the potential step to being CCMR met! Taking the TSI (Texas Success Initiative) test is an exam to determine if a student is ready for the rigors of college work. If a student is successful on the math and reading portions of this test, it will keep them from having to take remedial courses in college. This test also qualifies them to take some of the upper levels of courses that are in the TSTEM pathway.
