Generalized symmetries in QFT 2024

YITP-RIKEN iTHEMS international conference in Kyoto, Sep. 30 - Oct. 4  2024

Quantum Field Theory (QFT) provides a universal framework for studying many-body quantum systems, including in high-energy physics, nuclear/hadron physics, and condensed-matter physics. In many cases, QFTs of interest are strongly coupled, and it is not possible to solve their dynamics by direct computation. In such cases, symmetry plays an important role, allowing one to obtain insights on non-perturbative structures and a rich knowledge about the dynamics of the system in question.

In recent years, the notion of symmetry has undergone a renaissance, leading to the realization that

“Symmetry in QFTs = Topological operators in QFTs”

Symmetry in this generalized form provides us with a tool to uncover new non-perturbative aspects of QFTs. As such, there is strong motivation for the community to come together and discuss topics such as,

This conference aims to promote such discussions via contributions from invited speakers, as well as poster presentations from participants.
