I am currently a research fellow at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. I received my Ph.D. in philosophy of physics from the University of Western Ontario in 2025. My research spans foundational and epistemological issues in black hole physics and General Relativity and general topics in scientific modeling and explanation. Before my Ph.D., I studied philosophy of science at Tsinghua University and physics at Beijing Normal University.
My dissertation, Black Hole Inside and Out: Philosophical Treatise on Black Hole Physics, advised by Chris Smeenk (co-supervisor), Francesca Vidotto (co-supervisor), Wayne Myrvold, and Carlo Rovelli, explores the methodological foundations of black hole modeling, black hole thermodynamics, and the role of black holes in investigating quantum gravity. My primary research interests lie in the philosophical exploration of black holes, encompassing the methodological aspects of black hole modeling, including asymptotic reasoning and (de-)idealization in black hole physics. I am particularly interested in the thermodynamic (and statistical-mechanical) foundations of black holes and their role in probing theories of quantum gravity and cosmology.
My reflections on black hole physics have informed broader discussions in the general philosophy of science. These include deeper insights into scientific modeling (especially on (de-)idealization), scientific realism, explanation, inter-theoretic relationships—both between distinct theories and between macro- and micro-level descriptions within a single theory—as well as the concepts of emergence and approximation in physics.
Last but not least, I love cats. To hear more about my research, collaborate on philosophy, or simply want more pictures of my cats, contact me!
