Professor Youchan Hwang attended the KSCE 2026 Convention, the annual conference of the Korean Society of Civil Engineers, held at High1 Resort in Jeongseon, Gangwon, from October 21 to 23, 2026.
In General Session D7 (Structural Analysis) on October 23, he presented a real-time aeroelastic hybrid simulation (RTAHS) method for evaluating tuned mass dampers (TMDs) in wind tunnel tests of bridge deck section models. The aerodynamic force measured on the section model and the TMD interaction force computed numerically are projected onto the target vertical mode of the bridge and coupled through its generalized equation of motion, so that linear motors drive the section model to the resulting response at every time step. Because the method does not rely on an empirical vortex-induced force model and needs no scaled physical TMD, the mass, frequency, damping and installation location of the TMD can be changed freely while the evaluation stays grounded in measured aerodynamic forces.
In the same session, Jaehong Shim (Ph.D. candidate, Seoul National University) presented the aeroelastic response evaluation of a rectangular section using a two-degree-of-freedom RTAHS.
