Professor Youchan Hwang attended the 9th World Conference on Structural Control and Monitoring (9WCSCM), held at the University of Sheffield, UK, from July 19 to 22, 2026.
On July 20, in Session S033 (Hybrid Simulation and Real-Time Hybrid Simulation: Algorithms, Implementation, and Validation), he presented a method for implementing tuned mass dampers (TMDs) within the real-time aeroelastic hybrid simulation (RTAHS) framework for bridge deck section model tests. Aerodynamic forces acting on a physical section model are measured directly in the wind tunnel, while the bridge deck and the TMD are modeled numerically and coupled in real time. Because the TMD force is formulated in modal coordinates, the installation location and dynamic properties of the TMD can be varied without attaching a scaled device to the model.
Many studies at the conference addressed real-time hybrid simulation, structural control and damping devices. The talk extended real-time hybrid simulation, widely used in structural testing, to wind tunnel testing of bridge decks. The next WCSCM is scheduled to be held in Korea.
