The study of Asian languages is a critical component of ASCL. Majors are required to complete at least two courses beyond the three-course introductory sequence. We encourage all majors to continue language study beyond this requirement to increase their competency in the language they choose. ASCL also offers a language minor for students who wish to focus exclusively on language acquisition.

We strongly encourage students considering the study of Asian languages to begin in the fall of their first year. The first courses of the three-course introductory language sequences are only offered in the fall quarter. Students who miss the fall-term offering of the first-term first-year language courses (i.e JAPN 001 or CHIN 001) will need to wait a year to start the first-year language sequence because the starting course in the sequence is only offered in the fall term.

Students with background in an Asian language who are planning to enroll in ASCL language courses or who wish to have part of the foreign language requirement waived must take a Dartmouth -administered placement test to determine their fluency level. Online placement tests for Chinese, Japanese and Korean are offered to incoming students online via Canvas. Students are able to self-enroll in the placement tests. For more information about placement tests and how to access them, please look at information posted on the New Student Orientation Canvas website for incoming students.

Students with any knowledge of Indonesian/Malay are required to take a proficiency test to determine the best INDO course for them to take, or to see if they can be granted a foreign language waiver. Results from the test can be used for official purposes.

Levels: All (placement or exemption)

All students with any knowledge of Korean are required to take a placement test to determine the right course for them. The placement test can be taken anywhere, anytime of the year online. Students can take the test once per semester only. Results from this test cannot be used to pass any college language requirement or to be exempted from that requirement. For exemption in Korean, you must take the Korean exemption test.

All students with any knowledge of Vietnamese are required to take a placement test to determine the right course for them. Results from this test cannot be used to pass any college language requirement or to be exempted from that requirement. For exemption in Vietnamese, you must take the exemption test.

The Graduate School recommends students enroll in language courses for credit rather than auditing them. Please be sure to review the current Graduate School policy before enrolling in any undergraduate courses.

The Department of Asian Languages and Cultures offers two minors, the Advanced Asian Languages Minor (formerly the Asian Languages Minor) and the Asian Humanities Minor. The Advanced Asian Languages Minor emphasizes language study while also allowing students to learn more about the culture of their area of linguistic focus (Chinese, Hindi-Urdu, Japanese, or Korean) by taking two humanities courses. The Asian Humanities Minor is designed for students who do not require additional language training but who wish to explore interdisciplinary perspectives on Asian humanities. Both minors require the completion of 7 units.

Our accelerated courses are designed for students who already have good speaking skills (mainly heritage students) or those who studied Hindi or Urdu in the past and can review basic knowledge of the language at a faster pace. You will learn materials that are normally covered in a full academic year. The Hindi or Urdu script will be introduced right from the beginning. By the end of semester, you will be equipped with linguistic and cultural competencies that will enable you to communicate successfully with people of the target country at a novice-high level, and have a good foundation on which to further build proficiency in the language. Course focuses on all four skills (plus cultural skills) and employs the communicative approach as a main teaching methodology.

We provide students with diverse opportunities for studying Asian and Middle Eastern cultures and developing advanced skills in seven languages. Our courses cover literary and performance traditions, religious thought, social and political formations, and diverse media. Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Urdu, Hmong, Japanese, Korean, and Urdu language courses are offered from at least the first through the third years.

The major requires students to reach the third tier of courses in their language, plus nine courses which will include upper-level AMES courses. Students may customize their selection of AMES courses. 2-3 courses may come from study abroad, language study beyond the third year, and select courses from other departments.

Students considering taking a language course should first complete the Language Course Assessment Questionnaire in order to ensure they are enrolling in an appropriate level course. Students who fail to do so may risk being removed from the course. Students on the waitlist should also complete the assessment to ensure they are on the waitlist for the correct course.

Students who have already previously completed the language course assessment questionnaire and those who have completed the prerequisite language course (Department of Language Studies (UTM) language courses only) do not need to re-do the language course assessment questionnaire.

To access and complete the Language Course Assessment Questionnaire for other UTM language courses, please click on the links below. Completion of the language course assessment questionnaire is mandatory for any students enrolling in any of the UTM language courses listed below for the first time.

The language courses listed below are introductory level. Students who have a working knowledge of a foreign language may take a language placement exam to determine what level instruction to take. For further information on placement exams, please visit -seas.columbia.edu/placementexams
