What is the role of government? Do governments exist to protect their people from foreign assault, to promote their welfare, to encourage their virtue? Do we approve the Aristotelian idea of government as having an "end," or do we merely think it is a better alternative to anarchy? What is the "end" of government? Is Jefferson's "right to life" merely a right not to be killed, or does it involve something grander and more all-encompassing?
What is the role of the healthcare professions in today's world? As life expectancies extend, we find ourselves in uncharted waters. What healthcare system works the best globally? And how should young people who aspire to save lives in the medical field view their vocation? Is injustice baked into our system, or is it redeemable? Does the incentive structure need some tweaking, or must the entire wicked behemoth of the pharmaceutical industry and the legions of MDs on its payroll be slain like a beast of old?
Finally, what is the role of the Christian within this milieu? God's glory must be advanced by respecting and cherishing his image in mankind, but how do we best do this? Should we have church (or Church)-run hospitals, insurance companies, and associations? What would a Christian healthcare system even look like?
