Gameplay and Features
Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z is a third-person hack and slash game that features elements similar to previous titles in the series. You can run, jump, block and attack enemies using Yaiba's blade. A score multiplier on the right-hand of the screen accumulates your hit-count on the enemy. The "Ultimate Technique" mode seen in other titles has been replaced by a mode called "Bloodlust" which, when activated, allows Yaiba to destroy multiple enemies around him in quick succession.
The game also has some unique features that set it apart from other Ninja Gaiden games. For instance, you can use Yaiba's cyber arm to perform various actions, such as grabbing enemies, throwing objects, or hacking machines. You can also rip off zombie's arms or heads and use them as weapons or tools. For example, you can use a zombie's arm as a nunchaku, or a zombie's head as a grenade.
The game has a distinctive visual style that resembles a living comic book. The graphics are colorful and vibrant, with cel-shaded effects and comic-like panels. The sound quality is also impressive The game also has a great soundtrack that matches the tone and style of the game. The music is composed mostly by Grant Kirkhope, who is known for his work on games like Banjo-Kazooie, GoldenEye 007, and Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. The soundtrack features a mix of rock, metal, electronic, and orchestral tracks that create a dynamic and energetic atmosphere. You can listen to the entire soundtrack on YouTube, or check out some of the highlights, such as the Yaiba Main Theme or the Shadow Soldier.
Tips and Tricks
Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z is not an easy game, especially if you are used to the more refined and polished gameplay of other Ninja Gaiden titles. The game can be frustrating and unfair at times, but there are some tips and tricks that can help you survive and enjoy the game more.
Use your cyber arm wisely. Your cyber arm is not only a weapon, but also a tool that can help you in various situations. You can use it to grab enemies and throw them at other enemies, or use them as shields. You can also use it to hack machines, such as turrets or helicopters, and turn them against your foes. Your cyber arm also has a charge meter that fills up as you attack or take damage. When it is full, you can unleash a powerful blast that can stun or kill multiple enemies.
Use elemental attacks effectively. As mentioned before, you can use elemental attacks by executing special zombies and using their body parts as weapons. Each element has its own advantages and disadvantages, depending on the enemy type and the environment. For example, fire can burn enemies and spread to other objects, but it can also hurt you if you get too close. Electricity can stun enemies and chain to other targets, but it can also backfire if you touch water. Ice can freeze enemies and make them brittle, but it can also make the ground slippery.
Use bloodlust mode sparingly. Bloodlust mode is a powerful ability that allows you to unleash devastating attacks on your enemies. However, it is not available all the time. You have to fill up a bloodlust meter by killing enemies or collecting blood orbs. Once it is full, you can activate it by pressing both attack buttons at the same time. Bloodlust mode lasts for a short time, so use it wisely. It is best to save it for tough situations, such as boss fights or large groups of enemies.
Explore the levels and collect items. The game has some hidden areas and secrets that you can find by exploring the levels. You can also collect items that can help you in your quest, such as health packs, blood orbs, or upgrade points. Upgrade points can be used to improve your skills and abilities, such as increasing your health, damage, or speed. You can access the upgrade menu by pausing the game.
Learn from your mistakes and try again. The game has a generous checkpoint system that allows you to restart from the last checkpoint if you die. You can also retry any mission from the main menu if you want to improve your score or find something you missed. The game has four difficulty levels: Normal, Hard, Very Hard, and Legendary Ninja. You can change the difficulty at any time from the options menu.
Conclusion
Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z is a game that tries to be different from other Ninja Gaiden games, but not always in a good way. The game has some fun and funny moments, but it also has many flaws and frustrations that prevent it from being a great game. The game has received mixed reviews from critics and fans alike , so it might not be for everyone.
However, if you are looking for a mindless action game that does not take itself too seriously, and you are willing to overlook its shortcomings, you might enjoy Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z for what it is: a bloody and silly spin-off of a beloved franchise. If you are interested in playing the game, you can download it from Steam or other sources for free or at a discounted price if you are lucky enough to find some deals or promotions.
