Overview

The eXtended Reality (XR) technologies have been applied to a wide range of industries and occupational areas for maintenance, quality control, training, education, remote collaboration, etc. The industries can benefit from XR by providing their employees with timely and efficient instructions. The users can improve their work performance while reducing mental and physical workload through effective XR systems. However, as workplace conditions become diverse, the XR technologies should be adaptive and innovative to meet the new industrial needs. Furthermore, as XR applications supporting industrial and occupational tasks include physical movements and activities, it is necessary to perform a variety of assessments from ergonomics and physiological perspectives.

This workshop—eXtended Reality for Industrial and Occupational Supports (XRIOS)—aims to identify the current state of XR research and the gaps in the scope of human factors and ergonomics, mainly related to the industrial and occupational tasks, and discuss potential future research directions. XRIOS will build a community that bridges XR developers, human factors, and ergonomics researchers interested in industrial and occupational applications.

Keynote Speakers

Multimodal Interactions for Remote Collaboration and Training in XR

Abstract:

In this talk, I will discuss the role of multimodal interaction systems in enhancing remote collaboration and training in industrial settings, focusing on AI-enhanced Extended Reality (XR). These systems provide immersive training tools in virtual environments by integrating eye-gaze tracking, body gestures, foot input, and haptic feedback. I will highlight AI's role in interpreting user actions for precise guidance and real-time feedback, drawing insights from projects like SPARC and Xavier. The talk will address how these systems support remote team coordination, improve training outcomes, and maintain user engagement during extended sessions. I will also explore practical applications in maintenance and operational training, and the exciting future directions for more adaptive XR training platforms, which promise to revolutionize how we train and collaborate.

Bio:

Prof Joaquim Jorge is a Full Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon, where he founded the Computer Graphics, Human-Computer Interaction, and Extended Reality research group at INESC-ID. He holds the UNESCO Chair of AI and XR. He has served in leadership roles at IEEE VR, ACM IUI, and Eurographics, which is a testament to his influence and involvement in the XR community. He has worked in developing multimodal systems integrating eye-gaze, gestures, and haptics to enhance user interaction in health and industrial XR applications. His recent projects include MAGIC and SPARC, which focus on improving remote collaboration in virtual reality for industrial training, and Xavier. This project leverages AI to interpret multimodal inputs for better training and diagnostic processes in complex environments. He has authored over 378 peer-reviewed publications and appears on the Stanford top 2% researchers list. He is an ACM Distinguished Member and Speaker, an IEEE Distinguished Contributor and Visitor, and a Fellow of the Eurographics Association
