My copy of LibreOffice, version 3.5.0rc3, is capable of opening and saving xlsx files. Presumably any version after that will, and probably some version before. LibreOffice has more community developed plugins in its package, so OpenOffice may not have xlsx capabilities.

Note: LibreOffice Calc yelled at me when closing a modified .xlsx file. He asked me if I wanted to "use the default ODF file format to be sure that the document is saved correctly". I personally consider that to be my employer's problem.

Is there an Excel viewer for Mac OS X? I understand that the OS X developer tools are free and the Excel format is documented and I can teach myself Objective C on the web and set "write Excel viewer" as my first assignment, but I am hoping for a solution with a lower activation energy.

I know that the Microsoft viewer apps are discontinued and outdated. I'm looking for an app that I can install on a Windows RDS/terminal server for the sole purpose of viewing DOCX and XLSX documents. No editing, converting, saving, etc needed. Just really good viewing.

I setup ngx-doc-viewer to preview various file types using url, and while it works for pdfs, jpegs, and everything else I've tried, excel files just seem to not preview anything(it doesn't say "no preview available" like I've ran into before) and instead it downloads the file as well.

EDIT: I managed to preview a xlsx file by uploading it to firebase and getting the link. I also saw other people saying that they managed to display it by uploading the file to AWS Cloud Storage. If this is a option to you then maybe it's worth a try, you would first upload the file to some online cloud storage and then grab the public link to display it. otherwise the original post bellow stands.

If you need the preview to be uploaded by the user as I assume it's what you are trying to do, there's no other way besides reading the xlsx file and parsing the data to display in your html.

Below is the relevant piece of code in /root/pr/lib/birt-runtime-4_2_2/birt/webcontent/birt/pages/dialog/ExportReportDialogFragment.jsp (which I modified to view xlsx option as per another article in StackOverflow.com).

We are experiencing an issue where on both 12.16 and 12.17 versions an xlsx doc won't fill the viewer pane but if the mouse is pointed to where the sheet tabs should be, they are selectable. It does however work if you have any excel workbook open prior to previewing any xlsx doc. Any suggestions as to what could be causing it. Opus has to be quit and process killed for a user to then see the full preview pane.

If you get a file in use error, close any existing viewers and wait a few minutes. (You can also find any docsvw*.exe process in Task Manager and kill it, but if you do it's best to reboot afterwards as it can leave the corresponding Excel process in an unstable state, which might invalidate the test. In either case, there's no need to exit or kill the main dopus.exe process)

So added those onto the machine and that fixes the issue with the viewer pane but now what we are getting is the process for Excel and word are now not closing properly on the machines when the viewer pane changes to a different document. Any ideas?

Image attached is what we are seeing when we are having the issue. Thats with excel closed and opus closed on screen. As discussed with explorer these files don;t stay open when viewing them through the viewer pane.

But the other three Excel.exe processes, with filenames on the command line, don't look like anything the viewer would open. Those look like someone has double-clicked those .xlsx files to open them in Excel (as in the application, not the viewer). I don't have any of those on my system when viewing an .xlsx file in Opus:

Do you see those processes start at the same time that files are opened in the viewer? It's possible some kind of Excel add-on or something in the sheets triggers it, which I don't have on my machine or in my test sheets. (e.g. VBA macros, although I'd be surprised if the Excel viewer runs them. But maybe there's something else.) But otherwise those processes look like instances of Excel that have been launched by double-clicking files and which aren't from the viewer.

Need some suggestions for fast and efficient alternative for MS Excel only.

It should not contain other office things like powerpoint, pdf viewer, etc.

I have searched a lot on web about this but doesn't find good alternatives which should also on arch linux package list.

Tried Libreoffice and Gnumeric, but doesn't meet the expectations.

At the far end of this feature reduction there is just a single text-only worksheet with no formulas, plots, or formatting. And at this extreme it is trivially easy to convert the xsls file to another format like json for use in a web spreadsheet widget which can be damn fast, or csv for modifying in any text editor which could be customized to work well with column data (e.g., vim). Then after editing it could be converted back to xlsx.

I've been working on multiple client projects where we needed to automatically import CSV files and display them on a site and I couldn't find a handy existing solution. Our typical scenarios include tables that changed daily like court data or stock information.
