Learning objectives

  • Students will be able to understand the difference between waves and tides

  • Students will know how the moon phases affect the tide

  • Students will be able to experience how the mechanics of the ocean waves works first hand through our lab

Waves & Tides

Lesson Guide

I'm going to use this presentation on waves and tides as a lesson guide for the two subjects.

Class lab that goes along with the slideshow

Oreo moon phase project

As a reward for learning a very complex lesson, I plan to do this fun and tasty lab about moon phases with oreos! Who doesn't love cookies ?

My Trip to Griffith Observatory !

The solar system does in fact effect us

Inside the observatory, they have a room dedicated towards the movement of the moon and it's phases. Unfortunetly the vidoe I tok wan't vert good so I'm unable to show the class. However a school trip to the observatory would be a great way for everyone to experience it for themsleves!

This was one of the machines in the waves and tides room

This display was talking about the change of low and high tides throughout the year. And how the tides change due to the moons position around earth.

Moon phases !

As you may recall throughout the lesson, we spoke about the moon phases and how each phase affects our oceans tides and sea level. The moon is really Moon-jestic !
