Despite our rigorous testing, we're still frequently reading in tech and Hi-Fi publications about the virtues of expensive HDMI cables and how writers claim they notice a big difference. As you could have guessed, we feel this is incorrect. Plenty of our readers agree with us, including one who filed a formal complaint with the Press Complaints Commission against a magazine stubbornly professing their love for pricey HDMI equipment.
We've been pushing the subject for quite some time now, in an attempt to shed some much-needed light on the debate. For your benefit, we've split the article in two. Firstly, we've got the theory of why HDMI cables are largely similar to each other, including plenty of scientific explanation. The second part, at the bottom of this article, is an in-depth analysis and explanation of why you don't need to fork out so much on HDMI cables. The main gist of what you need to know, though, lies in the fact that you're always much better off spending your money on a budget Amazon cable and saving a heap of cash in the process.
A. Assuming that your one-bit error causes a problem in the picture and one pixel is incorrect, error detection on the TV will let it know where the problem is. The TV can analyse the surrounding pixels and make an educated guess as to what colour the error pixel should be. So, you may get one pixel per second that is ever so slightly the wrong colour. If you can spot that, you have the best eyesight of anyone that has ever lived. Well done you.
A. Although there are different HDMI standards, with HDMI 2.0 being the most recent, there are only two HDMI cable standards: Standard and High Speed. Standard is out-of-date now and supports lower resolutions; High Speed supports everything, including the HDMI 2.0 standard, which gives you 4K TV at 60fps (Ultra HD).
Scientific explanations are all well and good, but it's practical testing where the talking stops and the evidence starts. To prove the doubters wrong, we upped the ante and decided to test full-motion video to prove that changing cables makes no difference. In order to test scientifically, we turned to our Digital Foundry TrueHD card, which captures the RAW and uncompressed HDMI signal. Crucially, it performs no error correction, so we can accurately compare the output from different cables and spot any errors.
Once we got 50 frames from our range of test cables, we needed to compare them. Our rationale was that if frame one from HDMI cable one was the same as frame one from HDMI cable two (and so on), then the cables made no difference. In order to compare the files, we generated an MD5 hash of each image, which can be thought of like a digital fingerprint, as is represented as a 32-digit hexadecimal number, such as 6add8f2f6edee97b042fcb629fe2f5e7. In short, if the MD5 hash of two files is the same, the files are forensically identical.
Our first comparison was between an expensive 1m HDMI cable that costs Â70 and a 1m cable that costs Â4.99. In our first set of tests, 49 of the 50 frames we captured from the expensive cable were completely identical to the 50 produced from the cheap cable. With the one frame that was different, we got two completely different MD5 hashes.
We needed to find out where the error was, so we used Compare to highlight the error and found that there was a one-pixel error. To see if you can spot where the error is, take a look at the images below and see if you can spot the difference: the top image is from the cheap cable, the middle image is from the expensive cable and the bottom image is from the expensive cable (click any image to view it full-size).
Hard to tell, right? If we crop into the image (see below) to show the error, spotting a single-pixel error is incredibly hard. Look at the top-left of the right-hand image and look for the red pixel. This is the error, which is the difference between the cheap cable (left) and expensive cable (right). As if to prove our point about cable quality not making a difference, the single-pixel error we found wasn't from the cheap cable's output; it was a dark grey spot on a single frame of the expensive cable's output.

We were told that we hadn't tested for motion when we last ran our test, but we've since done that and still proved that there's no difference in quality between expensive and cheap HDMI cables. Our one concession on this matter is that more expensive cables have better build quality and are more rugged, so are a better choice if you're constantly unplugging a lead. Even so, there's no need to go crazy and spend a fortune. We're also happy to run a blind test for anyone that still believes that they can see a difference, although we don't think that anyone will be brave enough to do this.

If you have an Xbox Series X and there are plenty of monitors to choose from. The console supports all common resolutions, meaning you can get 1080p, 1440p, and 4k monitors, depending on your needs. If you have the Xbox Series X and want a 4k monitor with HDMI 2.1 bandwidth, they're becoming more common and more accessible than they once were, but they still cost more than other options. You can also find lower-cost 1080p and 1440p monitors, but those don't take full advantage of the Series X as they lack HDMI 2.1 bandwidth, so choosing the best option really depends on your budget.

The Samsung Odyssey Neo G7 S32BG75 is the best monitor for Xbox Series X that we've tested. It's a fantastic gaming display with low input lag and an incredibly fast response time across its entire refresh rate range, ensuring a smooth and responsive gaming experience with almost no blur behind fast-moving objects. Although the Xbox Series X can't take full advantage of its 165Hz refresh rate, it delivers an impressive gaming experience even at 120Hz, and it's fully compatible with everything the Xbox offers, including 4k @ 120Hz gaming. If you want a high-end monitor that's also versatile for competitive PC gaming, the Samsung Odyssey Neo G8 S32BG85 is a similar monitor with a 240Hz refresh rate, but it costs more.
If you want the best Xbox Series X monitor on a budget and still want a 1440p resolution, look into the Gigabyte M27Q. It's similar in features to the LG 27GP850-B, but it's a step down in its overall gaming performance. It has worse motion handling, particularly with 120Hz signals, leading to more motion blur than on the LG, but the overall response time is still great. It also has low input lag for a responsive feel, and most signals work from the Xbox Series X, except for 4k @ 120Hz because it doesn't support HDMI 2.1 bandwidth. It can also downscale a 4k @ 60Hz image, which results in a sharper image than a 1440p signal.
It also has low input lag that remains low across its entire refresh rate range for a responsive feel. While its overall motion handling isn't as good as the Gigabyte either, it still has a great response time at 120Hz, and it's decent 60Hz, but there's inverse ghosting caused by overshoot when you enable VRR. Speaking of which, its VRR support works with the Xbox to reduce screen tearing. Due to its 1080p resolution, it works best with 1080p signals at 60Hz and 120Hz, as it doesn't support a 120Hz refresh rate with higher-resolution signals, and you can't use VRR with 1440p @ 60Hz.
