My name is Xavier Ceamanos and I have been a research scientist at CNRM (Météo-France/CNRS) since 2017. My research focuses on the study of atmospheric aerosols and land surfaces based on shortwave satellite remote sensing. To do so, I develop radiative transfer-based retrieval algorithms enabling the estimation of physical and radiative properties (e.g. aerosol optical depth, surface reflectance) from geostationary Earth orbit (GEO) and low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites. Today, I am involved in several programs funded by space agencies and other research initiatives such as AERUS-GEO , iAERUS-GEO, and LSA-SAF. In this context, I collaborate with several French and international centers such as ICARE/AERIS, LOA, LAERO, IPMA, LATMOS, NASA GSFC/JPL, EUMETSAT, McGill University, ECMWF, JAXA, and JMA.
One of the main topics of my research is the estimation of aerosol properties from GEO satellites. This is achieved using retrieval algorithms developed at CNRM in collaboration with the ICARE data and services center. Figure a shows the transport of Saharan mineral dust towards the Mediterranean basin in July 2016 thanks to the data provided by the iAERUS-GEO algorithm applied to the EUMETSAT's Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) satellite. The high temporal resolution of GEO missions (i.e. 15 minutes for MSG) enables us to study the diurnal variation in aerosol properties, which is currently poorly understood. Current work is focused on the evolution of retrieval algorithms for the new Meteosat Third Generation-Imager mission, which will provide advanced characterization of aerosols and land surfaces.
Satellite aerosol observations are extremely useful for addressing a number of scientific subjects. This is the case for monitoring the transport of wildfire smoke, which is also a subject of my research. Figure b shows the massive smoke plumes emitted by US wildfires in 2020, thanks to global maps of daily AOD obtained from a constellation of five GEO satellites regularly spaced around the Earth (GOES-16/17, Meteosat-8/11, and Himawari-8). These data, combined with other satellite and ground-based measurements, make possible to study the emission, transport, and evolution of aerosols resulting from biomass burning aerosols*.

In 2008, I obtained a joint degree in electrical engineering from UPC/ETSETB in Spain and Grenoble INP/PhElma in France. To validate my degree, I did my master's intership at the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Iceland. I then enrolled in a PhD program in planetary remote sensing at the IPAG laboratory. After obtaining my PhD in 2011, I worked as a post-doc at CNRM until 2014. Before joining the staff of Météo-France in 2017, I spent three years at the French Aerospace Lab ONERA working on airborne hyperspectral remote sensing.
I serve as reviewer for several journals including AGU JGR-Atmospheres, Elsevier Remote Sensing of Environment, EGU Atmospheric Measurement Techniques and MDPI Remote Sensing
Since 2017 I teach in the Master in Computer Science for Aerospace at Paul Sabatier University (Toulouse III)
In 2014 I was co-lead of the surface radiation area of the CEOS/WGCV Land Product Validation subgroup.
I was visiting scientist at NASA GFSC in June 2011.
