I called Teufel tech support and they said it's a known problem when connecting via USB with a fix on the way, but for now I should stick to using optical cable for the most stable surround sound connection. As mentioned in my question I had tried optical without success, but now I disabled all other audio adapters, including the Realtek onboard via BIOS, as well as removing Realtek audio manager software and Xear audio driver and now the problem seems to be resolved.
i have a Fuze7 Armageddon headset. it was working until my sound was completely cut off. i have no speakers connected to my PC. so i decide to find the disk for the headset and reinstall its drivers. in doing so "Xear Audio Center" needed to uninstall all other drivers. it says "the installshield Wizard is removing USB Gaming headset device". its has been at a good 60% (green bar) for the past 45 minutes or so. i have gone through the uninstall a program and it still leads to the same progress. is there any other way for me to dump it? or is this normal and that the uninstall times are long af?

The referenced "Roccat Khan Aimo" headset uses a Cmedia CM6533X1 chip as soundcard. According to it's datasheet, there are really only 2 channels for output available. The virtual sound is then created by the "Xear" effects driver on the Windows side. It's not clear, why the device lists several configurations including surround21 ... surround71 under Linux. Maybe these are required to allow a proper connection by the use of the "Xear" drivers under Windows, but are not working on Linux. 3df8ca78c1
