When I started designing this tool-storage system, I had a few goals in mind, the first being that my tools are in sight and in reach. I wanted to avoid having to find a box or drawer or cabinet that needs to be opened to get at a tool. Opening a box, door, or drawer is generally a wasted motion, especially if you must unstack boxes to get something out of the bottom one. Stackable toolbox systems, while very useful, often end up spreading out sideways and can take over a job site. And I wanted to use the same system in the shop, in the work truck, and on the job, so mobility and versatility was paramount.

One of the other benefits of this system it that a single cart can be pulled out and reconfigured without affecting the rest. I built seven carts so that I can keep six in use on the truck and have one down for updates. The carts have proved very durable, which means that so far, pulling one out of rotation is only for refining the function, rather than for maintenance. The initial investment of time to build the carts was three weekends, during which time I built six carts with shelves, including tool holders in three of the carts, all with casters on and ready to roll.

EZ STAK is an industry leader and manufacturer of modular interior storage systems for work trucks, service bodies, vans and trailers. We specialize working one on one to deliver a configurable mobile workspaces. EZ STAK INC., owns and operates EZ STAK LLC and OPS Public Safety.

Several funding programs are available to support the use of advanced technologies, and because funding programs only pay for early adoption not for compliance, more funding opportunities exist for those fleets that act early. These programs are administered by State agencies, federal agencies, and local air districts. For example, the Hybrid and Zero-Emission Truck and Bus Voucher Incentive Project (HVIP) provides point-of-sale rebates to help offset the purchase price of Class 2b through 8 battery electric and fuel cell electric trucks and buses. Larger rebates are available for public fleets and small private fleets with vehicles located in disproportionately impacted communities. A list of all vehicles that are currently eligible for funding is available at California HVIP.

The Innovative Small e-Fleet Pilot Project is a $35 million set-aside within HVIP to pilot an incentive program geared toward helping small trucking fleets and independent owner operators access zero-emission trucks. This pilot project opened for voucher requests from eligible small fleets in August 2022. More information on this program is available at the California HVIP small e-fleets webpage.

The Truck Loan Assistance Program helps small-business fleet owners secure financing for upgrading their fleets with newer trucks. Small business truck owners with 100 or fewer employees, $10 million or less in annual revenue averaged over 3 years, and fleets with 10 or fewer heavy-duty vehicles subject to the In-Use Truck and Bus Regulation are eligible to seek financing under this program. More information on this program is available at the Truck Loan Assistance Program. This program is being redesigned as the Zero-Emission Truck Loan Pilot to better support the financing of zero-emission trucks along with any needed charging or fueling infrastructure, providing a streamlined lending process for small businesses that are transitioning to ZEVs.
