Wyoming Young Entrepreneur Initiative Resource Toolkit

The Wyoming Young Entrepreneur Pitch Challenge is a contest for young people across the state to promote their ideas for goods and services that will benefit communities and or the environment. We are looking to celebrate the state’s social innovations and innovators!

To get involved, youth will develop and present a short video pitch that describes their solution to a problem or need in their own community or state and submit it to the challenge. There is a set of simple activities to help youth learn creativity, problem solving, critical thinking, and presentation skills on the Wyoming Afterschool Alliance website. These activities can guide a class, club, or afterschool program through the entrepreneurship process. In addition to activities, mentoring is available to any group or individual upon request.

The Pitch Challenge invites youth into a dynamic conversation about shaping the Wyoming they want to see now and in the future. It provides resources for developing a mindset of entrepreneurial thinking and possibilities and teaches workforce readiness skills, whether or not youth become entrepreneurs. Wyoming Young Entrepreneur Pitch Challenge Modules

The Wyoming Young Entrepreneur Pitch Challenge Modules were developed to support the Wyoming Afterschool Alliance Pitch Challenge. Each module includes activities and videos to help educators and students understand the ideas.

  • Module 1: How do you identify the problem?

  • Module 2: What’s your solution?

  • Module 3: Who’s your audience?

  • Module 4: Who’s your competition?

  • Module 5: How will you make money?

  • Module 6: How do you pitch your idea?

Find the six modules and more at wyafterschoolalliance.org/pitch-challenge-modules.

The activities and competition are the result of a broad partnership with the University of Wyoming, WTBC, 4-H, afterschool organizations statewide, the Wyoming Business Alliance and many volunteers. Funding for the effort is made possible through an “Innovations in Learning” grant provided to the Wyoming Afterschool Alliance through the Charles Stuart Mott Foundation and supported by the Young Entrepreneurs Institute and Venture Labs. The grant is intended to promote innovation and an entrepreneurial mindset for youth in Wyoming.

Young Entrepreneur Institute (YEI)

At Young Entrepreneur Institute, we believe that every child should understand and experience entrepreneurship. When children learn the tangible and intangible lessons of entrepreneurship early in life, they can see how the real world works. And by experiencing these universal lessons — such as perseverance, hard work, self-confidence, financial literacy, and problem solving – students are more prepared to succeed in whatever they choose to do. Our vision is to see that these lessons are instilled in as many students as possible.

To provide children the opportunity to experience entrepreneurship, we employ a unique model of collaboration. In addition to teaching students directly, we leverage the participation of the community of teachers, educators and entrepreneurship organizations around us – the entrepreneurship ecosystem. We work with members of the ecosystem to share best practices in entrepreneurial education. Then, equipped with expert knowledge, they guide their students through the curricular and experiential program. Learn more at www.youngentrepreneurinstitute.org/.

VentureLab

VentureLab is a nonprofit organization that is helping create the next generation of innovators and changemakers through entrepreneurial learning.

VentureLab was founded in 2013 to teach kids, and girls in particular, to dare boldly and grow their innate creativity in order to identify and anticipate diverse societal needs, and think entrepreneurially in whichever field they pursue.

We began by teaching girls simple entrepreneurial steps: we encouraged them to come up with their own problem to solve, create a product, test its market, refine it, price it and produce it. As we took dozens of girls through our program, we watched their confidence expand as they grew entrepreneurship and STEM skills. Now, we’re democratizing entrepreneurial education for all youth by offering open-access curriculum that can be used by anyone passionate about preparing the next generation of creative leaders.

We’re devoted to empowering educators, youth leaders, and parents with the tools needed to unlock student potential and prepare youth, especially girls, to thrive in our changing world. But we can’t do this work alone. You can help prepare our kids to create tomorrow’s opportunities and approach life with an entrepreneurial spirit. Passion mandatory. No previous experience necessary. Visit venturelab.org.

Why Entrepreneurship Matters

“The Wyoming Afterschool Alliance is committed to helping to create the conditions for young people to grow and contribute. Wyoming will benefit from the perspective and insights of youth as Wyoming envisions our future. On the flip side, young people will benefit as they contribute and practice entrepreneurial thinking.” - Wyoming Afterschool Alliance Director Michelle Sullivan
