This is my family - my wife, Carol, and daughter, Jackie.
Hello! I'm Lee Larsen. I love music of all kinds and teaching music to all kinds of people! I've been teaching students of all ages for 30 years, as a piano teacher, choral director, and classroom general music teacher. I also perform regularly as a church musician and occasionally in other settings, such as accompanist, rock bands, jazz ensembles, and I sometimes also play on electric bass, ukelele, alto recorder, or percussion as well as piano.
I believe piano lessons should be fun and well-rounded, with theory and ear-training, duet and ensemble playing, and even improvisation skills a goal for all students to experience and develop. In my studio, we might sing a phrase, play a rhythm on my djembe or congas, or even get up and march, tip-toe, or stomp around the room! Music involves our whole mind, body, and spirit and there are many ways to draw out the understanding of and expression of music, and we should use any and every way that works and facilitates musical learning. I believe children should be challenged but not stressed out about their learning and progress. Students of all ages, even very young beginners, can learn to see and hear and feel the difference between music that is 'meh', just okay, and music that is excellent! So by 'fun' I do not mean low expectations, but music, as with sports and other endeavors, can and should be both fun and challenging.
There's also Lucky, our big boy ...
... and Cooper, our 'little' boy....
Lucky doesn't like being ignored :)
Here's my 6-ft Kawai grand Ppano.
Some families like to see performances from the teacher. The first video is an improvised offertory I played for the Sunday adjacent to the Martin Luther King, Jr., holiday, creating a medley of His Eye Is On the Sparrow, We Shall Overcome, and Lift Every Voice. They added a little too much reverb into the mix at the board, kind oif muddies uop some of the harmonies, but other than that I was really happy with how this improvised performance came out. The second video is a published piece for treble choir w/ piano that I composed as well as played the piano for the demo. During the stay-at-home time of the pandemic I did some online 'recitals' and took requests from friends; the third video is a piece by Howard Jones, Boom Bap Respite, that my best friend from High School, Brian, asked me to learn. Next is the very popular Bach invention in D minor ('#4'). Lastly is a 3-track version of the sending song 'Go Now In Peace' I did for a church during the lock-down/pandemic time from home. for virtual services .
Most families will, of course, want to know where my studio is located, too. I teach from a home studio with a walk-out basement in an end-unit townhome in the Sully Station neighborhood, where I have lived since 2004. There is a 'View larger map' link in the map image adjacent to this text. Clicking there should open a new tab with a better view in the Google Maps website. It might also be helpful to know that there is usually ample free parking along the main road in our neighborhood, Sully Station Rd., which runs right next to my home; it's just a few steps walk from the sidewalk into my studio. The convenience for students and friends visiting us is one of the reasons we chose this location when we purchased our home here.
