The credit scores provided are based on the VantageScore 3.0 model. For three-bureau VantageScore credit scores, data from EquifaxÂ, ExperianÂ, and TransUnion are used respectively. Any one-bureau VantageScore uses Equifax data. Third parties use many different types of credit scores and are likely to use a different type of credit score to assess your creditworthiness.

Locking your Equifax credit report will prevent access to it by certain third parties. Locking your Equifax credit report will not prevent access to your credit report at any other credit reporting agency. Entities that may still have access to your Equifax credit report include: companies like Equifax Global Consumer Solutions, which provide you with access to your credit report or credit score, or monitor your credit report as part of a subscription or similar service; companies that provide you with a copy of your credit report or credit score, upon your request; federal, state and local government agencies and courts in certain circumstances; companies using the information in connection with the underwriting of insurance, or for employment, tenant or background screening purposes; companies that have a current account or relationship with you, and collection agencies acting on behalf of those whom you owe; companies that authenticate a consumer's identity for purposes other than granting credit, or for investigating or preventing actual or potential fraud; and companies that wish to make pre-approved offers of credit or insurance to you. Because so many different credit scoring models are used, there is no single "good" credit score. Far more important than the number is how you rank on the particular scale being used. Because scoring models in general take the same things into consideration (primarily the information on your free credit report), a good credit rating on one scale will usually translate to a good credit rating on another scale.
Under federal law you have the right to receive a free credit report from each of the three nationwide consumer reporting agencies once every 12 months from AnnualCreditReport.com or by calling 877-322-8228. However, a free credit score is not included. Since information in your credit file can change frequently, it can be a good investment to keep tabs on your credit score and credit report more frequently by using a credit monitoring service.

If the 99.9% of 1-Star reviews isn't enough to convince you, I don't know how another review will. The one reviewer that gives this company 5 stars must work for them. The website says "FREE Credit Scores" and requires that you enter very personal information not needed for checking credit scores. I have an Intuit Mint account and it shows your credit score without even entering these things. When you get near the end, you are forced to enter a credit card and pay for this "FREE" service. Hey, guys, "FREE" means you don't pay. By requiring someone to pay sort of negates the free part.

FreeCreditScore.com, FreeCreditReport.com and Credit.com are websites owned by Experian Consumer Direct, a subsidiary of the credit bureau Experian. The sites offer users their personal credit reports from Experian on the condition that they sign up for Experian's Triple Advantage credit monitoring program for a fee. The credit report also comes with the user's PLUS credit score. The membership may be canceled with no charge within 7 days of signup by contacting the call center.
In October 2007,[10] Experian Consumer Direct began airing an advertising campaign featuring singer Eric Violette as a man struggling with difficult life circumstances due to his poor credit score, and his ignorance of it. The commercials feature jingles written using various distinctive forms of popular music. To date the company has aired nine different commercials, which have aired in different orders in different markets. The commercials featuring Violette and his band stopped airing in February 2010, as a new band was brought in. In June 2012, the original band returned in new commercials for FreeCreditScore.com as a part of a "comeback" campaign.
In May 2010 a nationwide band search began to find the new face of freecreditscore.com. Live auditions were held in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. Bands could also submit videos of themselves online at freecreditscoreband.com[18] for consideration. Many were typical entries, but some bands, apparently as a joke, submitted videos as well, most notably Comparative Anatomy.[19] In August 2010 The American Secrets (Formerly known as "Victorious Secrets", but changed the name to avoid any possible legal issues with Victoria's Secret)[20] were named the new FCS Band.[21] The band features Daniel Zott of JR JR.[22]

What are credit scores and why are they so important?
A credit score is a three-digit number that represents your total credit picture based on information contained in your credit files - including how responsible you have been paying your debts and bills, and the likelihood that you will meet your credit obligations. Your credit scores are based on many factors including your personal credit history, credit card accounts, and financial public records. Your scores are derived based on the credit information at the three major credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. Your credit score is important because it tells a potential lender what kind of credit risk you are, which is why it's important to know and understand all three of your scores. >> Learn more about your credit scores
What is a good credit score?
Credit scores typically range from 300 to 800 (depending on the scoring system), and your score could differ from bureau to bureau (Experian, TransUnion, Equifax), as creditors do not always report to all three. Typically, a good score is 720 or higher - meaning a lender will consider that person a low credit-risk in repaying a loan. You want the highest score possible to better secure a loan or a favorable interest rate. It is important to monitor your credit scores periodically. Checking your own scores will not lower your credit rating. >> Learn more about credit score ratings
