Introduction to EMS and EMS Skills Lab

Skills to Include:

-Backboarding

-Splinting

-Moving Patients

-Tourniquet Use and Wound Management

-Football Helmet Removal

-12 Lead EKG/Monitor

Nursing/Paramedic Skills Shift

Rotation Objectives:

Be able to start IVs without the use of ultrasound guidance

Understand different needle gauges and flow rates associated with them

Describe difficulties and work-arounds for starting IVs

Learn to spike an IV bag and set it to run to gravity

Understand basic IV pump operations

Understand the differences between straight needles for blood draws and IVs

Be able to tell which tube goes to which lab department for testing

Learn which tube color goes to frequently used labs in the emergency department

(While all of the learning objectives listed are important to your education, the major emphasis of this rotation is for you to get a better appreciation of what the nursing staff does and to learn to start peripheral IVs)

Respiratory Skills Shift

Rotation Objectives:

Be able to setup a nebulizer treatment using the correct medication and flow rate

Describe oxygen delivery devices and the approximate FiO2 delivered with each as well as the indications and contraindications to each

Effectively operate the bipap/cpap machine and be able to set appropriate settings

Effectively operate the ventilator and be able to set appropriate settings

Describe the waveforms and values associated with capnography

Dispatch Observation Shift

Rotation Objectives:

Understand how EMS/Fire/Police dispatch systems work

Understand the advanced directions given by dispatch

Understand the timeframe from call received, to dispatch, to arrival or EMS/First Responders, to arrival at hospital

Learn appropriate radio etiquette, language

Describe different EMS dispatch systems

Understand the different certifications required for dispatchers
