Self driving cars are appearing world wide, and it seems as though new companies are popping up weekly. As expected, this raises the question, “Are these safe? Can we trust them?” New research, courtesy of MIT and Delft University of Netherlands, is investigating the different types of human drivers. The goal of this research is to see if it is possible to train the AI in autonomous cars to interpret the mood and tendencies of nearby drivers. After calculating the type of driver, laid back or aggressive, the goal is to have the car react to these types of drivers by performing differently. For example, you would never cut a left hand turn across the oncoming traffic of an aggressive driver, but if a laid back driver is the oncoming traffic, you might drive differently and complete this left hand turn. This research is attempting to use the technology onboard the self driving car to determine the type of driver by monitoring their habits.
