spotted a disappearing deer
(or a spotted disappearing deer
which makes it probably a fawn
though all fawns disappear
that is how they become deer
but this which I spotted was a deer already
so had only been, once, probably a fawn)
nesting under the high noon black sky
an unsettling cryptid ungulate
weirdcore woodland wanderer
autigendered antlers angle arbitrarily
a ten-pointed trellis where
midnight blue climbing conchords croon
ripening in the first not winter frost
summoning the silent birds
baffled beaks miming stolen songs
between gluttonous grabs of bitter wine berries
until, at long last, unladen and languid,
it rose and reconstituted,
no longer a disappearing deer,
perhaps spotted or perhaps not
animals are cool
