This site contains the hard work of Writing 210 students at Wake Forest University. The course titled "Advanced Academic Writing: Navigating Genres and Discourse Communities" requires students to complete research on academic and/or public genres to figure out how to write in them from a specific position. The course asks students to first complete an annotated bibliography to study the genre and its texts thoroughly. The students then interview an expert who writes in that genre regularly. The end product is a guide (in the genre and medium of the student's choice) intended to help new writers in the selected genre learn some key takeaways to ease the anxiety of writing on their own.
The site is organized by knowledge areas, including "social sciences," "natural sciences," and "humanities." Some guides are not discipline-specific and are listed under "interdisciplinary."
We hope you find some useful writing information here so that your next encounter with a "wild" genre isn't quite as intimidating!
