Devonshire

Devonshire — British Tier VI cruiser.

One of the London-class ships—British "Washington Treaty" cruisers of the second series. The large-scale re-equipment of all cruisers of this class which occurred in the late 1930s to the early 1940s provided for changes in the ships' silhouettes, and noticeable reinforcement of their armor protection.

Ship Play-style

Devonshire is the second ship in the British CA line, and arguably the highlight of said line. She is uncompetitive, but not grossly so. Players who survived Hawkins are now rewarded with a much more potent ship, but players who expect good representation from the County class will be disappointed.

...............................

FIREPOWER

With a broadside of eight 203mm guns, Devonshire is less undergunned than Hawkins. Of course, this is nothing impressive for T6 when compounded with the flaws of said guns. This ship suffers from weirdly low shell damage, painfully short firing range, and a long reload. Her penetration is also wholly inadequate, which halves her effective DPM. Like her predecessor, Devonshire cannot fight same-tier cruisers on even terms.

Devonshire also tries to be an HE spammer, but still lacks the barrel count or reload to do this. She also coins the term "Devonshire effect" meaning her AP shells have such low penetration that they will not overpenetrate destroyers at anything but suicide range. Throwing AP at destroyers will yield higher damage than HE, so this is recommended.

This ship boasts a quad torpedo launcher on each side, a noticeable improvement from before. However, they still lack the range or alpha to be a viable weapon.

...............................

PROTECTION

Devonshire has a decent HP pool, and this is where the upsides end. She is a massive shell trap with a huge freeboard, but very limited armour protection. Her armour values are poor and resistance values appalling. She will eat massive amounts of damage from weapons of all types. When this is combined with her woeful gunnery and short range, it is clear that she is a tricky ship to play.

...............................

EVASION

Devonshire is slow and sluggish, but does gain a reasonable concealment value. Combined with the concealment modification in her third slot, this is a reasonably stealthy ship for her size. Many same-tier cruisers will still outspot her, but she has some wiggle room against capital ships. When playing this ship, use concealment to pick and choose your battles.

...............................

ANTI-AIR

Devonshire has bad anti-aircraft defence, despite her DFAA consumable. This is not worth building into, nor will it prevent CV strikes. Moving on.

FINAL THOUGHTS

This is a mediocre ship in a bad line. Devonshire feels great after playing Hawkins, but bad after playing other T6 cruisers (like Leander). She highlights the difficulty of the British CA line, while almost rewarding skilled play. Players who weren't deterred by Hawkins won't be turned away here. But she remains close to the bottom of the pile at T6.

Historical Info

Devonshire is a real ship of the London sub-class. She is depicted in her late-WW2 fit. Unfortunately, this refit historically removed her X-turret in favour of more AA. She keeps the X-turret in-game though, which means she is inaccurate here. Other elements are largely correct though.
