“AI destroys creative freedom”; a point so often repeated among society. Whether it's for art, work, or writing, it’s common knowledge that AI strips humanity of its artistic expression and leaves no room for individuality. But what if that isn’t true? What if, despite AI’s harmful nature towards creative freedom, a new form of expression could flourish?
Have you ever tried to write a story or an essay, but just couldn’t think of any good ideas? Well, you wouldn’t be alone. In fact, there's a whole term used to describe this lack of creativity - writer’s block. With so many pieces of literature out there, it’s hard to come up with an idea that seems original, and this problem has become incredibly common among students worldwide. So what can we do?
Yes, using AI to write whole paragraphs, stories, and essays is inexcusable, but what about its ability to generate ideas? We already use prompts and questions all the time in our school work, so it seems fair to say that AI could be used this way as well. Instead of letting ChatGPT write full sentences, we should let it assist us in laying the foundation for what we want to write instead, allowing our creativity to do the rest.
If you’ve spent any time on Youtube throughout the last few years, you're bound to have seen an AI cover or two of a famous song. Maybe it was a parody of My Way by Frank Sinatra, or a cover of one of Michael Jackson’s many hits. Either way, AI song covers have become the new norm on the internet, spreading like wildfire throughout social media. But have you ever stopped to realize just how influential these songs have become? Not only is it a testament to the technological advancements society has made, but it also poses as a new form of artistic and creative expression. Yes, most of them are low quality copies of each other, but it's a major step in the right direction. With the help of AI, we could create a society where anyone could express themselves, no matter the challenges.
So the next time you tell yourself that you won’t use ChatGPT because “AI destroys creative freedom”, think about all the ways it could benefit our imagination. Instead of replacing creativity with AI, use it as a tool to inspire creativity, because the world will continue advancing whether you like it or not. Even if all we can do is standby and watch as the world unfolds before us, we might as well make the best of what we’ve got.
