World Languages Collaborative

Saturday, February 26, 2022

9:00 AM - 12:15 PM

The Best Educators Working Together to Improve Our Practice

World Language professionals come together in February each year to share their expertise with colleagues. This collaborative supports professional development needs and encourages participants to explore their interests in teaching and learning, technology, and pedagogy.

This year, our spring collaborative is virtual and FREE. We look forward to your participation on Saturday, February 26, 2022.

Use this link to participate in all sessions:

Our collaborative uses a hybrid format – part traditional conference and part unconference. Sessions will range from formal to informal. We offer traditional sessions with a theme, presenter, and time for questions. Additionally, we will create space for peer-to-peer learning, collaboration, and creativity based on feedback from the registration form. The most important aspect is that participants can guide the agenda when registering.

We will begin as a whole group with introductions and instructions. Then, we offer three “rounds” of 50-minute sessions. You choose your sessions. Finally, we will reconvene for a closing session.

Use this document to share resources, take notes, and make contributions.

Complete this form if you want to share a lesson with your peers.

Languages Beyond the Classroom

Closing the Skills Gaps: HBCU Experiences in Code Switching and Language Acquisition

This presentation tries to explore how the Encounter of African American Vernacular English (AAVE), Standard English, and other languages taught in the classroom and elsewhere can be utilized as a tool for improving of the language learning outcomes at HBCUs. HBCUs are underrepresented in many educational venues, one of them being world language education. The development of the linguistic skills for students from HBCU is overlooked in the curriculum.

However, language code switching present in HBCU students seen as a Duality or twoness in languages and identity, could potentially enhance the world language acquisition effort. I showcase three experiences of my former HBCU students on the topic of code switching and language acquisition.

Learner Attitudes

Empowering Students from Day One through a Growth Mindset

More than ever, learners need guidance on how to learn. Learning a language is an excellent endeavor through which to deploy a growth mindset. If properly coached, students can understand that improvement above all else is the goal, and that proficiency increases through steady, incremental and intentional practice. Helping students foster a growth mindset will help them become not only better language learners but also resilient people ready to face challenges inside and outside the classroom. How do you help shape learner mindset in your classroom? What strategies and best practices help to create an environment where everyone works toward improvement.
