This list of metro systems includes electrified rapid transit train systems worldwide. In some parts of the world, metro systems are referred to as metro rails, subways, undergrounds, U-Bahn, or by various acronyms such as MRT. The total route length is 678.2km, but it is considered 669.4km without the Xijiao line. Therefore, Beijing Subway is the second longest metro system in the world. This paper estimates a global CO2 emissions model using satellite data at 25 km resolution. It also tests the impact of subways in the 192 cities where they operate. We find highly significant effects with the expected signs for all model variables, including subways. In a counterfactual exercise estimating CO2 emissions with and without subways, we find they have reduced population-related CO2 emissions by about 50 % for the 192 cities and about 11 % globally. Extending the analysis to future subways for other cities, we estimate the magnitude and social value of CO2 emissions reductions with conservative assumptions about population and income growth and a range of values for the social cost of carbon and investment costs. Even under pessimistic assumptions for these costs, we find that hundreds of cities realize a significant climate co-benefit, along with benefits from reduced traffic congestion and local air pollution, which have traditionally motivated subway construction. Under more moderate assumptions, we find that, on climate grounds alone, hundreds of cities realize high enough social rates of return to warrant subway construction.

Global warming is driving dangerous and disruptive flooding in underground rail systems around the world. Flooded tunnels and stations have disrupted service and stranded passengers in Boston, London, San Francisco, Taipei, Bangkok, Washington, D.C., and a host of other cities in recent years.

Overnight, the remnants of Hurricane Ida flooded much of the New York City subway. Mayor Bill de Blasio issued a travel ban and warned residents to "stay off subways" as up to 10 inches of rain fell in some parts of the region in a matter of hours.

It is the third time New York's subways have flooded this summer and the first time the National Weather Service issued a flash flood emergency warning for the city. Heavy rain has also repeatedly swamped underground tracks in Boston.

Cities that opened a new subway system during our sample period have an average population of four million people. They are located predominantly in middle-income countries (average GDP per capita of US$18,000, PPP adjusted). The average length of time from plan approval to opening is 11 years, with construction taking an average of six and a half years. On average, new subway systems start out with 14 stations and, 18 months after opening, provide about 130,000 trips daily. Figure 1 shows the evolution of ridership per thousand people in a city in the first five years of service.
