In 2013, we formed Workshop Project as a place to imagine what a pedagogical graphic design practice could be. We began by initiating a series of projects whose goal was to discover the form of this new practice by producing its artifacts. These artifacts—lectures, presentations, workshops, and an online archive of our work and process—engage us in dialogue with our colleagues, students and peers.
Workshop Project is Yasmin Khan and Jessica Wexler, two mid-career educators—middle-aged women: burnt but reliable, god-level archaic skillset, oracular, and transmutating under the radar. Our shared pedagogical practice, is built in stolen pockets of time: between meetings; during commutes; after work and home have shut down for the day. It is our found space, formed by an alchemical combination of ideology and the material realities of our lives as design educators and administrators.
Yasmin is Co-Director, MFA in Graphic Design at California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, California. Jessica is an Associate Professor and the former Chairperson of Undergraduate Communications Design at Pratt Institute in New York.
