Little Chinese readers help emergent, beginning, transitional, and intermediate readers build confidence learning the Chinese language.
How to use your little Chinese reader.
Little Chinese readers are 8 page books that provide children an opportunity to practice reading characters in context and to help build confidence and develop fluency. The text follows a predictable pattern and is supported by images, making them ideal for emergent readers in bilingual and immersion classrooms. The last page includes Chinese characters learned in the text. It allows students a chance to read and recognize Chinese characters out of context.
The little readers can be used while working with the entire class, in small groups, or one-on-one with individual children. They can also be assigned as homework for additional practice to reinforce Chinese characters learned in the classroom. They can also be used in class during independent reading practice or in a learning center. Illustrations are black and white so they can be colored by students. Many of the sentences include color words. Students demonstrate comprehension of the sentences when they color the pictures correctly.
How to make a Class Book
Class books are great for students to show off what they have learned. Photocopy one sheet for each student. The teacher can use this activity before or after using the little Chinese reader. The teacher brainstorms with the class the key vocabulary and writes them onto a chart paper. The teacher writes the sentence frame onto the chart paper or on the board. The class practices reading the different sentences by substituting the key vocabulary into the sentence frame. Students then choose their favorite vocabulary words to complete the sentence. They illustrate their own sentence. The teacher collects all the sheets and staples them together along with a cover sheet to make a class book. Students enjoy rereading the class book during independent reading time. The work also makes a great bulletin board display.
Language begins with speaking. We learn a language by first listening and then trying to mimic the sounds. Therefore one of the best ways for you to learn a language is to speak it. Using book walks and book talks with the readers will help build vocabulary needed to read the books.
The text has to be at your reading level for you to learn. You have to have some vocabulary to read. That is why pictures are so important. They add to the comprehensible input on the page of the little Chinese readers. Read the pictures before you read the words.
Language has to serve a purpose. You can learn a language, but if you don't use it, you'll lose it. You can't learn a language by memorizing text. You can learn a language as you try to read a book to get to its meaning.
