Hi Jenn. Kinda a two-tier question but about the same thing. Is there ever a case where you might approach a small press for a client's books, either because you've exhausted all larger publishers and/or because the client requests that you do - maybe because they just want to see the book published even if it means little or no money. Would you do this even if the publisher was not offering an advance? And, more generally, I do sometimes see other agents have deals in PW with small, sometimes very small presses, and I wonder why they did the deal, especially if there was no or little advance. Just for the sale/starting out? Because the client requested it? Etc. etc. Is it worth an agent's time? Whatever info you can give on this type of thing, either from personal experience or in general. Thank you.
Hey Jenn, I just got back from my weekly stroll around the children's dept. at B&N and feel more confused than ever with regards to Chapter Books. I see a large section of Chapter Books for emergent readers like The Timekeepers, Miles Lewis, Unicorn Princesses, Nancy Drew and the Clue Crew, etc. but what category do those fall under when submitting a manuscript to an agent? They're not MG so would Chapter Books just be lengthy "Children's" (i.e. >1000), when I submit via Query Manager?

He was running from the horror of his brother and best friend recently dying in his arms, and the haunting memory of causing the Fairhaven Bay fire. His friend Ellery Channing literally gave him the ultimatum of either taking some time off to write and think, or else be institutionalized.
Margaret Cavendish, Duchess of Newcastle, with all the privileges that brings, was a philosopher and writer. She wrote the first science fiction novel. And she wrote plays. And she was ridiculed for it, and men tried to bury her existence. Despite a very supportive husband, she was widely regarded with derision as the Mad Duchess. While I wouldn't say her plays are remotely as good as Shakespeare, it's not as though she had the advantage of friendship with Kit Marlow. To be a playwright in Shakespeare's time was a collaborative effort, bouncing ideas and lines off your actors and other writers. We can see in the folios how much the plays changed from performance to performance. They weren' static. That was a novel concept just starting to be introduced by the printing press. But who collaborated with Margaret? Who batted frenzied ideas around with the Duchess?

But what I did grow up with was Chowder. I never remembered it well as I got older, but what did stick with me was "The Puckerberry Overloads." Child me struggled to comprehend the logic behind how Chowder could be in his own mouth. After rewatching the series recently, I was very surprised and excited to see you were credited as one of the writers and the storyboard artist for the episode. I even recognized your voice from one of the characters. I suppose you really were there all along.

Some notes on the border art: the tree branch flourishes up top depict bristlecone trees, another unique Pleistocene holdover that clings to existence in remote parts of California. The insects in the curve of the mammoth tusks are condor lice (Colpocephalum californici), a parasite that fed exclusively on California condors and went extinct when the 22 birds left in existence were captured and de-loused for the breeding program to save their species. The woven art on the sides depicts two indigenous myths about condors, left side as a beneficial entity, saving humanity from a primordial flood (Wiyot), and right side as a bloodthirsty antagonist that gets beheaded by Ground Squirrel (Mono). The bones overhead (mammoth, moose, horse) are all Pleistocene megafauna that the condor would have been specialized in feeding on.
