Night Demon – ‘Outsider’

(Century Media)

It has only been a year since Night Demon’s last album so they haven’t wasted anytime with getting their fourth album ‘Outsider’ out. I think this quick turnaround might be showing here, because it’s a good album but nothing to rave about and maybe the song writing process has been rushed a little. It’s a decent album if you’re into their style of music but had these songs gestated longer and other songs perhaps added over time maybe it would have been a more impressive collection, as these guys definitely have the talent to deliver.

See there is very little to complain about or musicianship to criticise, these guys know their brand and are exceptionally talented musicians and ‘Outsider’ showcases that. The songs didn’t stick with me and failed to create much impression, not because they are bad, they just seemed like Night Demon off cuts. So, the lack of impact is where the album falters, maybe it’s an album that needs repeated spins and perseverance to really kick in, I’m not sure.

Previously I would have mentioned the bands NWOBHM leanings heavily, and again these influences are apparent but perhaps not as strong, as I feel these songs are less retro than they have produced in the past. They have always been a very heavy band but that end of their song writing seems more prominent with far more emphasis on thunderous rhythms and fast paced songs this time around.

With ‘Outsider’ I think the band have thrown a lot more old school Thrash Metal into their song writing cooking pot. Not only does this explain the fast pace exhibited on most the songs but also the more prominent heaviness. In the past I would have likened the band to Iron Maiden and their ilk, but with ‘Outsider’ I think Megadeth and Metallica would be closer comparisons. Don’t worry though if you enjoy Night Demon because of their NWOBHM edge there are still elements of that in these songs with occasional Maiden style melodic guitar solos and other traditional genre trademarks popping up now and again.

‘Outsider’ I fear may be for established fans only, it’s worth a spin, just don’t expect to get your face melted off!
