130R – ‘130R’

(Independent)

The first thing that grabbed me about 130R was the extremely high standard of musicianship on display, I’m very surprised this is an independent release. Hailing from the North East of England these guys definitely have a very British Hard Rock sound and style. I’d be surprised if principal songwriter Edward Box wasn’t brought up on a heavy dose of UFO and Uriah Heep.

Classic Rock definitely forms the backbone of these songs, with a heavier emphasis on melody and a tad more metallic guitar. 130R though is a modern sounding Melodic Hard Rock record which is entertaining and engaging, they have crafted a real gem of an album for an unsigned band. I think anyone who listens to this album will think they have label backing or support given its quality across the board not just in its song writing.

These guys also prove it is possible to create a professional sounding album using home recording. Which is made even more impressive when you know some of these recordings were made remotely due to some band members not having home recording equipment. Modern technology has certainly made it easier and cheaper for independent bands to get their music out there and at a professional standard. It’s certainly helped 130R come across very impressively.

Guitarist and principal song writer Edward Box is a stunning guitarist displaying his talents in many formats from chunky riffs to infectious licks and on ‘Season Of Denial’ even showcases some classical style guitar playing. The songs have a bold swagger and are full of energy and quintessential British hard rock traits and always maintaining a strong melodious stance. Ian Humphrey is a fantastic vocalist; Box definitely found the right man to sing his songs. His voice is smooth and melodious but he also has a strong powerful delivery style, he definitely keeps the overall sound of the band smooth.

It’s a strong album overall but ‘If You Could See Me Now’ is definitely one of the stand out tracks with its insanely catchy guitar riffs and licks and its powerful vocal from Humphrey.

130R have given us a very impressive debut album and hopefully the first of many more, these guys should garner a lot of praise and grow a bigger fanbase on the quality of these songs and performances. British Hard Rockers should definitely take note, remember the name these guys have the potential to be something huge!
