Autumn is here, with its rich earthy colors, colder temperatures, and shorter days, together with the need for the fashion brands to promote their autumn/winter collections with look-books and campaigns. This year, to offer my clients something different from the usual black/grey/white backdrops I have in my studio, I decided to give my carpentry tools a good spin and build my own wood backdrop.

if you dont want to deal with complicated UV, u could just use 1 texture and alter its RGB value in Photoshop, and then use Block instances to create several type of wood that you like, and then spread it randomly with grasshopper.

I did that before in my project when dealing with this wooden platform = (I blurred the image due to file size, but u should be able to see what I mean)

Now comes the important part, which determines the overall look of your end results: cleaning the wood. I used a good old fashioned cleaning scrub brush and bleach water for this. Make sure you wear rubber gloves when you do this, because, well, bleach. The bleach water will help lighten the boards and hopefully kill any organisms that might be lurking down in the wood. I left the wood out in the sun to dry and further lighten it.

The color stain you choose is up to you. I stained my wood with a custom mix of stains by Minwax, a combination of walnut and a stain with a little bit of red hue to it. The stain itself is super easy to apply. Just brush it on, let it dry, and repeat as many times as you want. The more times you apply the stain (letting it dry in between), the darker and richer the color will be. Make sure you let the stain dry for 24 hours.

Once you have the boards arranged just how you like them, use a brad nailer and nail straight through the board and down into the plywood. Start at the bottom of the wood wall and work your way up, careful not to shoot nails into more than one piece of plywood. This way, you can still move the pieces of the wall individually.

Of course, as I had foreseen when I built the wall, my family reconfigured our living arrangements not long after. My 19-year old was able to enjoy the room, but instead of moving the wood wall to my new office, we decided to leave it in there because it looked so beautiful.

I hope you enjoyed this step-by-step article, and it gave you a good process to create your own wood wall masterpiece. If, after reading through the process, that wood wall tutorial looked like too much work, check out our Anyvoo webcam backdrops. They let you look professional in minutes, no construction project necessary. ?

Hi again, I am looking to try to do more realistic wood grain textures and wondering if there are any good extensions out there to help me with this? I know how to add textures and colours direct from SketchUp but I am looking for something more realistic? Not sure where to even start?

Nice. So, do you take a board and photograph all six faces to get face, edge and end grain? These would be unfinished boards, I assume? I bring it up because I used all clear douglas fir for interior doors and trim in my house, finished with clear, oil based polyurethane. The color is deeper with oil based than water based or unfinished state, so the best way to get that look would be to photograph a finished piece of the wood, not an unfinished one.

FWIW, some of the textures I use are hand-drawn, too. The plywood texture on these chairs was drawn by hand. The texture is 48 x 96 inches so I can pick out different parts of it as desired. I do have some plywood edge materials, too.

I have been playing around with textures and I downloaded a few wood textures from textures.com. Is there a way to get the textures a little more clear or is this just natural when I have to resize to fit on a piece of furniture?

@Joe4 I opened your model of the coffee table and produced a quick video of how to apply a wood grain texture to your model. Besides applying the texture, I also show how to control the method that material is mapped onto the object. Here is the link to the video:

@Lagom The Arroway site has some really nice texture packs - thanks for the link. For creating custom wood patterns, I use a program called Filter Forge found here. You can create your own wood patterns and also make them seamless textures. Filter Forge works as a Photoshop Plugin or as a stand alone program.

The Weathered Wood Background Stamp creates rustic, wood grain backgrounds, perfect for all your fall paper crafting projects. It can also make for a great focal point when paired with a small, simple sentiment. Weathered Wood is a refresh on our Barnwood Background (now retired). This version is larger, allowing you to choose which direction you would like to place the wooden slats, regardless of the orientation of your card. 5.5" X 5.5". 1 piece.

When the boards are glued in place, put a flat, heavy weight (like an upside down coffee table or a whole lot of books) on top and let dry overnight. You could also use wood clamps if you have them, but basically you just want something that will hold the pieces firmly together until the glue is dry.

Thank you! (Great big sigh of relief!) After not being able to find a good resource for wood background props I decided to DIY it

and so glad I found your post! This is exactly what I needed. Your board came out great.

I am so glad I found this post. I used your tutorial as the guide for making my own food photography board. I did dark wood as one side and grey as the other. I love how they turned out. Now, I am about to rip apart free pallets and make some boards out of those. Thank you so much for sharing this.

This is great content. I struggle with food photography and just recently realized I need to make it easier for myself and get some props and backgrounds done and ready to go when I am ready to take photos. This will save me a lot of time. Thanks for sharing.

I have been driving DH nuts about how to figure this one out! ANd your post came just in time..I am sick of my counter top and I ve been drooling at rustic wooden tables particularly in the color you`ve showcased.. COuld you please add the name/number of the paints that u bot from Lowes. We have never painted and I need to start from scratch. IAlso what is that glue?

Thanks

wayyyyyy easier than building something and I too was skeptical of vinyl but these products swayed me.

In the middle of rural Kentucky you have a Hobby Lobby - not fair!!! I've never been! I keep hearing that I'm missing a lot and I adore that faux wood paper! I've got to see how far I have to travel to get me to a Hobby Lobby!!! Thanks for sharing this with us! P.S. Can't wait to give you a hug at Haven!!!

So, when I first heard the term "faux wood wallpaper" and then read that you were applying it to the back of your bookcases, I thought, "Oh no, it's going to look like one of those cheap bookcases with the thin piece of particleboard on the back." But that was before I saw your pictures with the finished project. Omigosh, genius! I love your white milkglass pieces and the few pretty flowers for accent on your shelves...with the faux wood wallpaper in the background. I should have trusted you and not second-guessed you! Sorry! Please forgive my initial reaction! Hey, now I'm a believer!

Your faux wood paper inspired me to change the background on one of the canvasses I was working on. I made it a faux barn siding. Complete with nails and everything. Thanks!! Will be revealing in a few days. Happy new week. Hugs, Gee

Inside I'm giggling. We buy real wood and paint it so we can buy fake wood paper made of real "wood at one time" "products (could have recycled paper in it but that's wood made into paper and processed to remake the paper we make from wood)...and it's all just a hobby ...so we can easily change out our fake wood that really IS wood at one time so is it fake?!! Whew. Do you see the dilemma this thistleWOOD post is producing???At least you made it simple. It could be fake brick contact paper my Mom used to cover the real brick plastered over in my sisters room in an old sturdy farmhouse way back when fake bricks over real bricks covered with plaster and paint was all the rage....oh? About 1960 or so...

I am so sorry to say I've been admiring this since your post but not looking. So if our town ever finishes the Hobby Lobby and I buy fake real wood product to back my bookcase which is real wood in the front but particle board covered in fake wood paper that looks real and ive pledged and shoved books and bric a brac on for 29 years without a scratch...does that make me a faker and then you are the original? This means. Im getting too silly. Time for my devotions. Although hubby and I did pray and quote verses for you see, I'm greatly disabled yet going for serious tests and he too at the same time, going for results and more infusions that leave him sick for three days but in serious pain all the time. Your posts? Pretty. Inspiring. But oh so funny in this only you way...

And THIS is why you troll down EVERY aisle of Hobby Lobby! Because you never know what treasures you might unfold! I've got to get over there. I need some burlap ribbon, too, and would you believe that the last time I visited Michaels, I couldn't find any? Hmmmm. I should have said, "wood" you believe . . . ;)Happy Monday, Sweet girl! Tell the softball folks I said "hi!" :)

I have this exact bulletin board paper on the backs of my built in bookshelves in my keeping room. I did it in February and everyone that comes in thinks that I've planked the backs with real wood! Amazing how something like this can make such a change and statement! :) Yours look fabulous, as does all of your decorating!

Hi, I have a request! Does anybody have the Wood background with the HP logo in the center that were original wallpapers from any machines? I found it online but I only trust 3rd party websites when there's evidence saying they are the original wallpapers for that particular machine! Thank You! ff782bc1db
