When capturing beautiful scenes in nature, your picture can benefit from a bit of foreground interest. When you find a magical landscape to photograph, do it some justice by including something interesting in the foreground. I see many nature photos showing empty landscapes and skies without any consideration for the foreground.

Have you ever taken photos in nature and been disappointed with the images you produced? Returning from a photography outing with images that please you can be a challenge. So my next tip is to make your photos more balanced. Capture images of nature with careful consideration of what you include in the frame, and balance all of those elements.

The advantage of nature photography is it can be done at any time during the year and in different seasons. Summer is a great time to document lush landscapes and green foliage when everything is in full bloom, whereas spring and autumn can provide blooming flowers, cooler climates, atmospheric weather and the occasional mist. The added benefit of autumn is the change in colours of autumn foliage, giving you opportunities for vibrant photos.

Snow can add contrast in landscape vistas. For example, the snow in this scene helps the dark silhouetted tree stand out. I also find that snow-capped mountains are wonderful subjects to photograph during the winter season.

Photography is another of the many ways to enjoy and preserve nature, and your national marine sanctuaries are the perfect place to experience the wildlife that lives around us. Taking photos is a special way to view Earth because it allows us to observe creatures or scenes in a much more detailed way through a still frame. Not only do we have the pleasure of seeing animals or scenery in their natural habitats, but we can take a piece of the sanctuary home with us to continue appreciating nature. We can also share these memories with friends and inspire others to visit these incredible places in person one day! Here are some amazing images from the past year to inspire your next adventure and photoshoot.

When we enter into a national marine sanctuary, we're entering into the home of many beautiful and sensitive creatures, and should be respectful of their habitat and natural behaviors. Some of the easy to remember practices include making sure to leave no trace by cleaning up after ourselves, and keeping a safe distance between us and any wildlife we spot, even if it means our photo doesn't turn out exactly as planned. After all, experiencing nature in real life is always wonderful, so let's work together to help it continue to thrive.

Photos provide the chance to enjoy, share, and preserve nature. As the weather gets warmer, let's get outside and take advantage of all that the beautiful sanctuaries have to offer. Find the best nature photos in one place; we are constantly adding to our collection of breath-taking photos of landscapes and wildlife. These nature pictures include serene pictures of trees, lakes, plants, flowers, outdoor animals, seascapes and more.

Photographers refer to the time periods just after sunrise or before sunset as the golden hour (also sometimes called magic hour) because of the beautiful, diffused light that is created by the sun being low in the sky. To really get a stunning landscape photo, go out during these times and take lots of pictures. With the sun low on the horizon, the scene will take on a warm glow and you might be able to capture long shadows that will add depth and interest to your images.

Shooting all your pictures from the same point of view can sometimes make your photos all start to feel the same. Try changing things up to add a new touch to your photos by kneeling or lying down on the ground, or find a way to get up high (can you hike up a nearby hill or safely climb a tree?).

As well as being a wonderful shot, Jason's image encapsulates all that is Comedy Wildlfe and was a very, very popular entry. We are super excited to be lauching our Comedy Wildlife Guided African Safari (yup, i know, catchy title) for October 2024. Not only guided by the legendary Kate Humble, but also our founders Paul Joynson-Hicks, a wildlife Photographer and Tom Sullam who takes pictures of things that dont move...zzzz I jest of course, he is an award-winning landscape photographer so ideally placed for our African adventure. Its a small group of 12 people maximum in three vehicles, so loads of space. Its an adventure.

There is not one teaching resource I treasure more than picture books. The good ones have such a masterful knack for laying out factual information in the midst of wonderful storylines. The illustrations, of course, help our children put pictures to names and places and ideas.

When my children were younger, one of the best things I did was use picture books for nature study. There are so many wonderful picture books that can inspire a deep interest or understanding of nature!

Sometimes, we would pack along a picture book and a blanket and actually read as part of the nature walk. This mid-walk reading might have the purpose of a cozy rest time or a specially planned inspiration to find more, learn more, or discuss more.

When I knew what the topic of the walk was ahead of time, I would often pre-read a picture book before setting off. Giving children pre-knowledge, or even just building excitement, can make nature walks more productive to be sure.

This is another wonderful book about flowers that also happens to be a biography about First Lady Ladybird Johnson. It tells the story of her love for wildflowers and how she set about to beautify the U.S. through planting campaigns.

Not only is this book a wonderful story of the life cycle of a dandelion through the seasons, but its illustrations are gorgeous, too. In a Nutshell, written by the same author, is similar in that it follows an acorn through its life cycle with beautiful illustrations. Both are written with simple text, but could serve older children well if they need to understand entire cycles of plant life.

This is such a charming book about a barren mountain who befriends a bird and that friendship changes everything for the lonely mountain over the years. It would be wonderful to use during any nature study about birds, mountains, erosion, or even seasons. Another book by Alice McLerran that encourages play in nature is Roxaboxen.

But the amazing thing is it appears that our access to nature doesn't even have to be real for us to reap at least some of these benefits. A new study has found that just looking at still images of nature is enough 'natural' stimulus to lower our stress levels.

Researchers led by Vrije University Medical Centre in the Netherlands recruited 46 participants in an experiment designed to see how looking at images containing nature could settle a person's nerves. Participants outfitted with sensors to monitor their heart rate and stress levels had to complete mathematical problems on a computer, with the test set to function at both normal and stress-inducing levels.
