Group Exercise Therapy for Women with Alcohol Dependency

These group therapy sessions are created for building strong bonds with other women who are dependent on alchol and want to change. The stigma of recovering from alcohol dependency among women, according to Lamb et al., is shame. Many find shame to be the root cause of their dependency on alcohol. But women specifically feel there is very little outreach due to surrounding cultural issues. As researched and stated by Mendoza et al. "Exercise may be a useful complement to treatment programs aimed at reducing the negative neural and functional consequences of alcohol and drug use." So, this resource was made to begin a foundation between counselors and a group of women who may be struggling with alcohol dependency. It will consist of four concurrent weeks in which these groups will have personal time together to talk in a safe space about their own life struggles, provide reassurance, and exercise to combat substance use disorders.
