Dr. George Suckarieh, an emeritus professor at University of Cincinnati, developed the research topic, "Women in Construction: Recruitment, Retention, Promotion, and Success!". I was approached by Dr. Suckarieh to apply for the Emeritus Student Mentorship Award for Collaborative Projects with him for the following topic. As a female in the industry, I was interested in the research and decided to apply. After several months of developing the proposal, Dr. Suckarieh and I were granted the award by the University of Cincinnati's Emeriti Association.
In the Fall 2023 Semester, Dr. Suckarieh and I began drafting a survey for male and female industry professionals (craft and management) in the Greater Cincinnati area. For assistance in constructing the survey, we interviewed twelve industry professionals. The survey questions were geared towards the research objective, exploring obstacles women face in a male-dominated industry and highlight strategies to increase women’s presence at the craft and management levels. The research will result in a guide for women who are currently in/or pursuing career paths in the construction field as well as for construction employers to successfully expand their workforce with gender diversity, by recruiting, retaining, and promoting women in their companies. Upon completion, the survey was distributed and remained open for one month. The results were analyzed and graphically represented in a final report that will be presented to the Emeriti Association Board at the end of the Spring 2024 Semester. The final report can be viewed in the research project section.
