A neighborhood custom expresses that King Wulfhere of Mercia established an abbey of St Mary at Wolverhampton in 659.
Wolverhampton is recorded as being the site of a conclusive fight between the undivided Mercian Angles and West Saxons against the attacking Danes in 910, despite the fact that sources are hazy with respect to whether the fight itself occurred in Wednesfield or Tettenhall. The Mercians and West Saxons asserted a conclusive triumph, and the field of Woden is perceived by various spot names in Wednesfield.
In 985, King Ethelred the Unready conceded lands at a spot alluded to as Heantun to Lady Wulfrun (a noble woman) by illustrious contract, and henceforth establishing the settlement.
