What is Wolf in Sheep's Clothing?
Wolf in Sheep's Clothing is a metaphor that describes someone who pretends to be harmless or friendly, but is actually dangerous or malicious. It comes from a fable attributed to Aesop, a Greek storyteller who lived in the 6th century BC. In the fable, a wolf disguises himself as a sheep and infiltrates a flock, only to devour them one by one. The moral of the story is that appearances can be deceiving, and that we should be careful of whom we trust.
The origin and meaning of the phrase
The phrase "wolf in sheep's clothing" has been used in various contexts and languages throughout history. It appears in the Bible, in Matthew 7:15, where Jesus warns his followers to beware of false prophets who come to them in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. It also appears in Shakespeare's plays, such as The Merchant of Venice, where Portia says that "the devil can cite Scripture for his purpose", and Henry V, where King Henry says that "the king hath many marching in his coats".
The phrase is often used to describe politicians, leaders, or celebrities who pretend to be virtuous or benevolent, but are actually corrupt or evil. For example, some people might call Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, or Osama bin Laden wolves in sheep's clothing, because they deceived millions of people with their propaganda and charisma, while committing atrocities and crimes against humanity.
