The process was used extensively in Algonquin Park during a wolf research program conducted from 1958 to 1965 by Douglas H. Pimlott for the Ontario Department of Lands and Forests (now Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry). After using the wolf howling technique to find and monitor packs of wolves for research purposes. In the early 1960s, the naturalist staff at the Park Museum were fielding many questions about the howling (either of the wolves or the researchers) and wanted to learn more.
Formal Public Wolf Howl programs began on August 17, 1963, after an announcement was placed in The Raven, the Algonquin Park newsletter, inviting Park visitors to an expedition where Park visitors could potentially hear wild wolves respond after a human imitation of their howl. When a few staff casually went down to the appointed meeting location at the Two Rivers Picnic Ground on August 17, 1963, they soon found a traffic jam of 180 vehicles and over 600 people - a contradiction to the widely held belief that few people would turn out. On that evening, visitors were led to a location by Park staff where they heard a faint reply from one wolf after a human imitation of a wolf howl.
In the early years (1964-1968), Public Wolf Howls were held intermittently, mainly because of logistical problems, poor success getting replies with no or little advanced scouting, and partly because the populations of wolves adjacent to Highway 60 was largely eliminated in the last phase of a wolf research program (which sought to determine the sex and age structure of the study population).
From 1969 to 2021, Public Wolf Howls were conducted annually on Thursdays in August, or in September before Labour Day, when weather and accessible wolves permitted. Park visitors met at the Outdoor Theatre for a presentation on wolf ecology and the changing perceptions of this elusive animal; event protocol was provided; and then the group travelled by car (on rare occasions, walked) to a place along Highway 60 where wild wolves might answer the imitations given by the Naturalist staff. The only disruption to this extremely popular interpretive program was cancellations in 2020 and 2021 for health-related restriction involving the COVID-19 pandemic and large gatherings.
For example, I come upon the safe and I sit for 30 sec. in the area.. I hear one wolf howl. I'm feeling pretty good. I loot the safe and hang back for a bit.. about a minute later, I hear a pack of wolves howling. Suddenly someone comes up on the safe. I don't think it's a coincidence?
Howling may be heard at night, but it is not a behavior directed at the moon. Instead, it is used as a social rally call, a hail to hunt or as a territorial expression. Did you know that individuals have different howls that can be heard by other wolves 6-7 mile away?
The gray wolf is one of the most social carnivores. A wolf pack typically has five to eight individuals, but as many as 36 have been reported in one pack. These family groups typically consist of an adult pair, called the alpha, and their offspring.
Gray wolves once had one of the largest natural ranges of any terrestrial mammal in the Northern Hemisphere, but expansion into the western U.S. placed wolves and humans in conflict from the start. Cattle ranches believed wolves were a threat to their livelihood, and a history of hunting and poisoning devastated wolf populations, bringing them to the brink of extinction.
In 1973, the Endangered Species Act helped reestablish wolf populations. A combination of legal protection, human migration to more urban areas and land-use changes has helped stabilize them since, and in 1995, they were reintroduced to the northern Rocky Mountains.
The answer is yes, but it may require equipment, which is not just the human ear. The publication quoted below is from Montana State University Disentangling canid howls across multiplespecies and subspecies: Structure in acomplex communication channel. (It is not clear whether this work is part of the Canid Howl Project which welcomes contributions of howls and analysis from non-scientists.) This work identified 21 howl types and
analysed a database of over 2,000 howls recorded from 13 different canid species and subspecies.........[They] found that different species and subspecies showed markedly different use of howl types, indicating that howl modulation is not arbitrary, but can be used to distinguish one population from another.
One qualitative trend noticeable from the exemplar 209 howls (chosen as those nearest to the cluster centroid) is that the smaller species (red wolf, coyote, New Guinea singing dog, domestic dog, golden jackal) favoured howls that ended with a sharp drop in frequency, whereas larger species (arctic wolf, eastern timber wolf, European wolf, Mackenzie Valley wolf) used howls with much less frequency modulation, particularly at the end of the howl (Figure 4), although this may be an artifact of the lower fundamental frequency used by larger species.
Wolves utilize their own language, and recently scientists have learned that the howl of these enthralling animals changes over the course of seasons. Wolves have sophisticated social lives, which leads to a complex array of howls that signal different things.
Another study from 2013 suggests that when separated, wolves will howl out of loneliness or affection for other wolves. The scientists conducting the study concluded that a wolf howls more or less depending on the strength of its relationship with the missing wolf.
2015 marked the 20th anniversary of the reintroduction of gray wolves to the northern Rockies, and since that time wolves have been under nearly constant threat of losing their protections. The Weekly Howl provides insights and education about the gray wolf and updates on the status of its protections while celebrating the iconic species as a vital part of a functioning, healthy ecosystem. Posts ran through the summer of 2015 and resumed in the fall of 2016.
Used mostly as a novelty, Wolfhowl gives a Barbarian the ability to use Druid abilities, most notably Werewolf. While the form is rather pathetic compared to the Werewolf Druid, it does allow Barbarians access to Feral Rage, which lets them add to their life steal. The Life % is always welcome, especially if the Barbarian uses Battle Orders before transformation.
Howls are an auditory vocalization that various species of wolf are capable of emitting as a form of communication. The implementation of it in-game varies considerably between major revisions of WolfQuest! This article is specific to the player's customization and the player-wolf itself.
If it is used while standing next to any ungulate carcass as of 1.0.8 will mark the location of a dead animal on the world map and compass with a pink icon, though with some exceptions: carriable fawns and calves, beavers, hares, fish and all meat chunks cannot be marked. This mark prevents the player from losing any carcasses they may have discovered to scavenge from and keeps them from forgetting where their own kills were, effectively allowing for an easier return trip to it later on when their own wolf or packmates are getting hungry. When a marked carcass despawns, its marker will disappear along with it.
The secondary howl is useful after pups are born, as it can be used to call the active mate to the player any time, from any distance. This is especially useful if they were left at home to watch over and protect the pups while the player is busy, on an excursion (hunting or marking territory), or exploring.
In Classic, a full, uninterrupted howl can be used to increase territorial claim within the boundaries of the player-wolf's active den site, and a howl in the presence of the player-wolf's single-player pack initiates a pack howl to raise pack affinity.

In the Anniversary Edition, certain aspects of howling are unavailable during multiplayer. The secondary howl has no major functionality to it, thus players can decide amongst themselves whether to give it an alternative use.
If another player's wolf isn't visible on the world map, they will reveal their position if they howl. If a server has at least two players, the game will initiate a pack rally when at least two player-wolves howl. During this time all players present in the server must cooperate by repeatedly howling together until the meter is filled. Alternating between primary and secondary howls effectively keeps the meter filling for as long as there are no breaks.
In Classic multiplayer, when at least two player-wolves howl, a pack rally will be initiated, during which time all players in the server must come together and cooperate either by repeatedly howling themselves or performing emotes to raise the bar.
Acoustic signals serving intraspecific communication by predators are perceived by potential prey as warning signals. We analysed the acoustic characteristics of howling of wolves and found a striking similarity to the warning sounds of technical sirens. We hypothesize that the effectivity of sirens as warning signals has been enhanced by natural sensory predisposition of humans to get alerted by howling of wolves, with which they have a long history of coexistence. Psychoacoustic similarity of both stimuli seems to be supported by the fact that wolves and dogs perceive the sound of technical sirens as a relevant releasing supernormal stimulus and reply to it with howling. Inspiration by naturally occurring acoustic aposematic signals might become an interesting example of biomimetics in designing new warning sound systems.
