Frequently Asked Questions

1) I've never meditated before, should I come?

No! Come to one of the Monday meditations or use our list of resources to practice a bit before you come to one of these. These will be silent unguided meditations meant to help deepen your practice and increase your endurance.

2) Is some famous teacher going to be there?

No, just us. We are awesome though, and this is a non hierarchical setting where we encourage each other and share our knowledge and energy with each other.

3) I've never meditated for 45 minutes before, am I ready?

If you can sit for 25 minutes, you can sit for 45. A group setting encourages you to stretch your endurance. Come to one of our Thursday sessions, if you can last through that, you will do fine.

4) Will there be a meal?

No. We will have some cookies available for a snack starting the first walking period if you are hungry, otherwise you may bring your own snacks for the walking periods if you desire. If you wish to share your snacks, bring something yummy.

5) What do I bring?

Bring your own Zabuton, Zafu, Wooden Bench, Yoga Block, Bolster, etc. Chairs will be provided. Wear loose fitting comfortable clothing. If you get cold easily, bring a blanket. The church may be cold in the winter. You may bring your own water bottle/snacks for walking breaks. Leave any valuables at home.

6) Should I shut off my cell phone during meditation?

Please. If you are an emergency worker or healthcare worker, please leave it on vibrate and let us know beforehand. Please help us maintain silence during all the meditation periods, walking periods until Dharma Talk and Group Dialogue.

7) Where is this taking place?

Chapel of the North Presbyterian Church. 300 North Forest Road in Williamsville, NY. Plenty of parking and a safe area.

8) What happens with my donation?

Our group is all volunteer, our time and service is our dana (donation). Proceeds will be split between our host Church and a local charity. Donations may be written via check to North Presbyterian Church with Meditation Retreat written in the lower left corner. All checks written to the Church are tax deductible. We accept cash.

9) I have never meditated with your group before / I meditate with another group / I am Zen/Theravada/MBSR/atheist/Mahayana/Yoga based, can I still join?

Yes! We welcome all but just ask that you are capable of sitting extended periods.

10) I cannot stay the whole time / my butt hurts and I want to leave / I can only come for a single session

Please stay as long as you can, if you need to leave, please do so during a walking meditation period break. If you join us later, please do not interrupt an ongoing sitting but wait until a walking meditation break to join us.

11) Despite your amazing FAQ, I still have unanswered questions.
