Actions for Week of November 10, 2024
What a devastating week it has been!! In 2016 when 45 was elected we were stunned, shocked, dismayed, disgusted, and yet hopeful that it was an “aberration” (in the words of RBG). Now 8 years later we must deal with the reality that 74 million Americans support what the man is peddling, i.e. a repudiation of the very ideals upon which our country was founded. It is so hard to understand and to believe that friends, family, neighbors, co-workers – for whatever reason – voted for him again. And so very disheartening to know that next year we will once again face a continuous onslaught of harmful actions and insane decisions that endanger not only everyone in the USA but also people and countries across the globe.
The 45-47 regime is more organized this time but so are we. Out of the 2016 election grew a resistance movement that encompasses hundreds of groups and tens of thousands of people. When we marched and created the Maryville Huddle in January 2017, we developed a mission statement based on unity principles that still apply today…

Over the last 8 years we have discovered people who support these issues locally, across Tennessee, and nationwide that we didn’t know existed. Think of the friends we’ve made and the communities we’ve built. We’ve seen organizations form in Blount and Knox Counties (e.g. Welcoming Immigrant Neighbors-BC, A Place to Stay, Alcoa-Blount NAACP, SURJ, Knoxville Immigrant Allies, Appalachian OUTReach, etc.), and across the nation to address these issues and to protect vulnerable, marginalized people. Allied groups here and abroad are in place, networked, and already starting to prepare for the 45-47 regime, e.g. Women’s March, Sunrise Movement calls held this past week. See events list below for organizing calls scheduled next week.
Although we will never look at our country and fellow countrymen the same again, the USA we hope and dream for is not yet dead. Separatists in the Confederacy tried to kill the USA once before and they failed. It is estimated that the American Civil War resulted in 1.5 million casualties, affecting every family in the country. The 620,000 lives that were lost equate to 6 million souls today. Don’t we owe it to them to not give up on the country they sacrificed so much for? How can we let hate and bigotry prevail?

1. Provide Feedback on HEAL Program – Gov. Lee is establishing a $100 million loan program to help counties affected by Hurricane Helene to clear debris and repair damaged water systems. This is an interest-free loan designed to help communities while they wait for FEMA reimbursements. The question is whether any of the counties involved can afford to pay back such loans. Why doesn’t Gov. Lee help these communities by giving them money from the State’s Rainy Day fund, which currently has $2.1 billion in it? Or why doesn’t he use the $144 million allocated in this year’s budget to expand school vouchers that can’t be used for that purpose because the bill was defeated? Oppose HB1955/SB2586 – This bill requires a third-party voter registration organization to register and provide certain information to the coordinator of elections before engaging in a voter registration event or program; prohibits persons and organizations collecting voter registrations from taking certain actions with regard to the voter registrations and provides civil penalties for violations. It severely hinders NAACP and others from registering voters and voter engagement activities. This means they must re-register their names for every election cycle if they want to conduct voter registration drives. This bill harkens back to the 1950s and 1960s in which NAACP members and other civil rights groups were pressured to hand over the names of their members and officers who engaged in the voter registration activities. It is before the House Elections & Campaign Finance Committee on March 13th and the Senate State & Local Government Committee on March 12th.

Oppose HB1652, HJR0797 and HJR0706 – HB1652 declares that no circuit, chancery, or other court has subject matter jurisdiction over any legal action, challenging any rule, regulation, or procedure of the senate or house of representatives. It basically makes the legislature an autonomous body in the state that can do what it wants without repercussions, or the ability of the public to object. HJR0797 proposes an amendment to the state constitution to prohibit an expelled GA member from being re-elected or reappointed. HJR0706 prohibits an expelled member from qualifying for office for 4 years. These resolutions are anti-Rep. Jones/Pearson measures. In the event the House expels them again, Republicans want to make sure their political careers are over, regardless of the will of the people.
