Along with amusing place names I like to take photos of road signs whose meaning is loud and clear, even without words. It must run in the family, because my mother has a collection of photos of funny signs from all around the world. These are my favourites from our last two trips.

It was like Desert Island Discs, only without the discs, and no Bible and the works of Shakespeare either. And I was marooned on the island of Manhattan. Which made the experiment challenging or possibly insane, but I knew I had to try it anyway.

When travelling in foreign countries, one of the biggest challenges you will encounter is the language barrier (unless, of course, you are adept at speaking the native language at a fluent, conversational, or even basic level). Unable to speak coherently to others or understand what locals are saying, you will often have to communicate without words, which for many people is part of the charm and inherent excitement of travel.

I was staying at a hostel in Chinatown at the time. One morning, I walked downstairs to the hostel common room and sat down on a couch adjacent to a window, through which I could watch with curiosity at the busy street scene outside.

Sometimes the best travel experiences are the least expected, those moments that are truly spontaneous in nature. For me, personally, I think I look back most fondly and nostalgically on those fleeting connections with locals that happen completely by surprise. While experiences of awe and wonder during my travels have been equally unforgettable, there is something uniquely meaningful about those times of connection without words. In a way, they are living proof of how we are all more similar than different.

There are a number of posts of people looking for basemaps without labels and replies talking about the various services available. One idea came up a few times suggesting you could load the base of an ESRI Basemap directly and simply not load its corresponding reference layer.

More mutterings and the door would close. The child would return to its dance through the streets and I would uncurl slowly, slide from the chair and disappear into my room. Shell-shocked, exhausted and broken-hearted.

But how is this done? You must first understand that words cannot express the things that are sung by the heart. Take the case of people singing while harvesting in the fields or in the vineyards or when any other strenuous work is in progress. Although they begin by giving expression to their happiness in sung words, yet shortly there is a change. As if so happy that words can no longer express what they feel, they discard the restricting syllables. They burst out into a simple sound of joy, of jubilation. Such a cry of joy is a sound signifying that the heart is bringing to birth what it cannot utter in words.

Now, who is more worthy of such a cry of jubilation than God himself, whom all words fail to describe? If words will not serve, and yet you must not remain silent, what else can you do but cry out for joy? Your heart must rejoice beyond words, soaring into an immensity of gladness, unrestrained by syllabic bonds. Sing to him with jubilation.

A steep and well camouflaged path connects the temple to the lake. There is a path around that makes for a gentle thirty-forty minute stroll. Dodge the bicycles and tandems or hire your own. Cross the suspension bridge to have a little look round that picturesque island and admire the scenery. Get caught in the rain. Catch a ride on one of the little boats. Stop for coffee at one of many cafes on the side of the lake opposite the temple. Just a little further on, vendors sell the usual varieties of street food.

Members of the Pirah tribe use a "one-two-many" system of counting. I ask whether speakers of this innumerate language can appreciate larger numerosities without the benefit of words to encode them. This addresses the classic Whorfian question about whether language can determine thought. Results of numerical tasks with varying cognitive demands show that numerical cognition is clearly affected by the lack of a counting system in the language. Performance with quantities greater than three was remarkably poor, but showed a constant coefficient of variation, which is suggestive of an analog estimation process.

How can you tell a story through an image? How can a picture make up for the absence of words, movement, progression of time?

To dumb it down unforgivably, a story requires characters, a storyline and a certain point of view from which to watch all the elements in play. Often, the juxtaposition of two frames can animate certain anecdotes; sometimes a certain facial expression or a way of moving can bring life to a story that starts with the photo and lives in the imagination of those who observe it. I get completely overexcited every time I come across a mirror photographed by Brassa: a shot-reverse-shot, a profusion of stories, emotions and dynamics between characters, all found in the same image!

People are energy and passion. If left alone and without too much prodding, people look for that which makes them immensely happy, or, conversely, that which grips them, which worries them. Tracing the mental geography of their thoughts, using only the light, becomes a fantastic challenge!

Liter of Light is a global, grassroots movement committed to providing affordable, sustainable solar light to people with limited or no access to electricity. Proofs without words are generally pictures or diagrams that help the reader see why a particular mathematical statement may be true, and how one could begin to go about proving it. While in some proofs without words an equation or two may appear to help guide that process, the emphasis is clearly on providing visual clues to stimulate mathematical thought. The proofs in this collection are arranged by topic into five chapters: Geometry and algebra; Trigonometry, calculus and analytic geometry; Inequalities; Integer sums; and Sequences and series. Teachers will find that many of the proofs in this collection are well suited for classroom discussion and for helping students to think visually in mathematics.

By acquiring a knack for explaining in words what they already understand, students will be better prepared to seek their own explanations...The book offers models of the sort of visual thinking that is often woefully neglected in the classroom. ff782bc1db
