Do you tend to overthink and worry about saying the wrong thing to your teen or maybe you react too quickly and feel regretful after the fact? Consider how you can use your unique knowledge of your child along with empathy to tune in and communicate trust and see how this can then open lines of communication you never thought possible. Consider how trusting yourself can allow you to give them the space they need to self-soothe, self-regulate, and turn to you by choice instead of having cycles of reactivity. We will also consider when it is critical to own your own mistakes and apologize to help repair those inevitable relationship ruptures.

Given by: Kerry Rasp, MBSR facilitator, Meditation Instructor, Certified Life Coach

With everything going on in the world today and the ever increasing pace of our busy lives, we seem to have forgotten how to let it all go occasionally and simply relax. Our minds are incessantly thinking, our bodies feel stressed and there's this suspicion that life can be much more fulfilling than it currently is. Mindfulness meditation is a 2500 year old Buddhist practice which has become increasingly relevant for our times. Among other things, it enables you to calm your mind, open your heart, live more fully in the moment and cultivate an inner contentment regardless of life's circumstances. In this 90 minute class, Kerry will offer basic instructions in mindfulness meditation, lead a guided meditation, share simple techniques for calming down the 'monkey mind' and allow time for discussion. His approach is lighthearted and low key and your questions are encouraged. The class itself is a relaxing and quietly engaging experience.

Kerry Rasp is a meditation teacher, Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) facilitator and life coach. He completed his training in MBSR with Jon Kabat-Zinn at the Umass Medical Center in 2000 and at Coach U in 2001. Kerry has been practicing meditation for over 20 years and his teachers include Joseph Goldstein, Christopher Titmuss, Jack Kornfield, Stephen Batchelor, Bhikkhu Bodhi and Thanissaro Bhikkhu. He teaches meditation at Montclair State University and is a co-founder of the Montclair Center of Spiritual Practice. He regularly leads meditation groups throughout the NY/NJ metro area, and workshops to a variety of companies and organizations. Those who most benefit from his training include young adults, parents, caregivers, entrepreneurs, those who are in transition, stressed out, in chronic pain or anyone seeking to live a clear minded, simple and fulfilling life.

Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction in Metuchen (MBSR)

Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is the ground-breaking, scientifically proven mindfulness program developed in 1979 by Jon Kabat-Zinn. Since its inception, tens of thousands of people have experienced lasting, life-changing benefits from the course. Participants have reported feeling less stress and reactivity amidst life's ever changing circumstances, an up-lifted mood, greater relaxation and sense of well-being. Additionally it's been proven that practicing MBSR helps decrease symptoms of stress-related physical illness, cultivating a greater ability to cope with chronic pain and increase one's energy and enthusiasm for life.

The educational MBSR course at WiseMind meets for 5 consecutive Thursdays beginning May 16th from 7 to 9 pm. There will also be a day long quiet retreat on Sunday, June 9th from 9 am to 4 pm to deepen our mindfulness practice and further explore how it applies to our daily lives. Each session offers a mix of engaging mindfulness exercises, class discussion, handouts/readings as well as home assignments. Course leader, Kerry approaches this important work in a lighthearted, relaxed and friendly way in a setting where all will feel comfortable to share.
